This is what abortion looks like when it doesn't “succeed,” which means it doesn't complete its intended goal of killing the unborn baby targeted by the effort to “terminate” the pregnancy. While the debate over abortion is ofter cast in such terms as “choice” and “terminating” of a pregnancy, it is important to remember there are real human beings that are affected, fatally, by such a “choice” to have an abortion.
There are some who survive abortions, the rare victims that live despite the attempt to snuff out their very human life through an abortion “procedure.” Melissa Ohden is one of those who has survived through abortion. In this article and this video you will hear from her.
Ohden was born in August of 1977 in Sioux City, Iowa after surviving an attempted abortion in the hospital.
“When I was 14, I found out the truth about my life. That's when my survival came to light. When I first found out I was devastated. That night I struggled with anger for the first time,” Ohden said in the video.
“What I know about my birth is, I wasn't intended to be born alive. My mother who was a college student at the time, was 19, she wasn't married to my father, she was almost eight months pregnant with me from what we can gather. She went into the hospital and had a saline infusion for an abortion done. The saline infusion abortion involves injecting a toxic salt solution into the amniotic fluid surrounding that pre-born baby in the womb. And the intent of that salt solution is to actually scald that child to death from the outside in.” Ohden said, “I soaked in that toxic salt solution for five days.”
This procedure usually kills the unborn baby, allowing the mother to return days later to give birth to a dead baby. In almost all instances of this “procedure,” the baby does not survived being scalded in the womb.
“My mother went back to the hospital, had her premature labor induced with me, and that was the day my mother was meant to give birth to a dead child. The medical professionals initially believed the abortion had succeeded in ending my life,” Ohden explained.
Despite the possible thoughts of horror at the notion of surviving such a “procedure” as horrific as that, Ohden miraculously finds a way to be positive and feel blessed for having survived and to have been able to live.
“The joy for me is realizing, that that day, when I was left for dead in the hospital, a nurse heard me, that nurse and that team of professionals understood that my life was worth trying to save.” Ohden said, “After I survived that failed abortion, my biological parents made an adoption for me.”
Ohden's adopted parents were truly blessed to welcome her into their family as an adopted child and were attracted to adopting her from the moment they saw her.
Ohden explains, “My parents tells the story of how the first time they laid eyes on my lying in the incubator, they fell in love with me. I always joke, I wasn't a pretty baby, I know that about myself, but my parents saw the inherent beauty that existed in me. I want everybody to see that. If we behind words, if we look behind numbers, this is what abortion looks like. This is what tens of millions of other children would like, in one way, shape, or form, if only they were given the opportunity to live.”
Putting the whole story in perspective, Ohden offers this for all to consider when thinking about her life and survival and all the tens of millions who did not survive abortion, saying, “It's not just a word, it's a statistic, it's not just a choice, just a right, it's a human being.”
