"This Is the End" debuted at No. 1 for movies on demand from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6, 2013, according to Rentrak.The comedy "This Is The End" follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption. Starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera and Emma Watson. "This Is the End" got mostly positive reviews from critics and was a hit at the box office.
"The Croods" debuted at No. 2. This is a 3-D animated comedy adventure that follows the world's first modern family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always been their home is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods are rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts as they discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures, and their outlook is changed forever. The voice cast includes Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener and Cloris Leachman. Critics has mixed reactions to "The Croods," which was the first blockbuster animated film of 2013.
"World War Z" dropped from No. 1 to No. 3. This tense and thrilling film follows former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (played by Brad Pitt) as he helps stop the chaotic pandemic that has gripped populations around the world. "World War Z" features stunning visual effects and edge-of-your-seat action and suspense that take the Zombie apocalypse phenomenon to a more extreme and electrifying level. "World War Z" got mostly positive reviews from critics and was a blockbuster at the box office.
"Now You See Me" dropped from No. 3 to No. 4. "Now You See Me" pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against the Four Horsemen, a super-team of the world's greatest illusionists. The Four Horsemen (played by Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco) pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law. "Now You See Me" got mostly negative reviews from critics, but it was a sleeper hit with movie-going audiences.
"Iron Man 3" fell from at No. 2 to No. 5. The movie features the return of Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire Tony Stark, also known as superhero Iron Man. In "Iron Man 3," a fanatical leader named the Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) wages a high-tech war against Iron Man. The movie's cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall and Jon Favreau. "Iron Man 3" got great reviews from critics and is the highest-grossing movie of 2013.
