This date in MLS history: June 16

In 2001, D.C. United's Santino Quaranta became the youngest player to score two goals in a game. Quaranta was 16 years and 245 days old when he accomplished the feat at Kansas City en route to a 3-0 victory against the host Wizards.

For a moment, the Baltimore native also was the youngest Major League Soccer player drafted, until a 14-year-old Freddy Adu was chosen by D.C. But to this day, Quaranta still holds the two-goal accomplishment from eight years ago.

Quaranta's in the midst of a second stint with United, which started last season. He admitted his past drug addiction. He knew he wanted to revive a career that started with high expectations at an early age.

The 24-year-old leads United in assists, and he has started in eight of the team's first 11 games, despite an early hamstring injury. Things are looking up for this still-young MLS veteran.
