This bowler’s 200 game takes the cake

What does it take to get a bowler on a roll?

How about celebrating his birthday by feeding him some bowling-themed white birthday cake? And for good measure, give him a second cake – this one a chocolate variety.

Both were presents from his “Gayle’s Gang” teammates in the “Guys and Dolls” league at AMF Woodlake Lanes in Woodland Hills.

With such a positive climate, it should have come as no surprise that birthday boy Tom Martino feasted on the pins in his first game Tuesday night and added a turkey to the mix.

Martino’s turkey – or three straight strikes – provided the springboard for a 201 game, his high in many months.

“It’s been a while since a 200,” said Martino, a Chatsworth resident. “I had some 180s and 190s last month, but I hadn’t had a 200. And it was all because of my birthday cakes.”

Added Martino, a 159-average bowler: “It was a good birthday because we won three of the four points.”

Martino finished his night with a 128 ("I hit the basement") and a series-turning 174 in his third game.
