If you want to start your 4th of July off with a bang, two local races have multiple options to let you do just that! The West Texas Running Club hosts the 45th annual Firecracker Run at the Terry County Park in Brownfield. This is the longest continuously running road race in Texas with former participants including George W Bush and Willie McCool.
The Firecracker Run includes a 1 mile kids fun run, a 3 mile run and a 10 mile run. The kids run kicks off the day at 7:40am with the 3 mile and 10mile races starting at 8:00am. The cost of this race is $1 for the fun run, $5 for running club members and children under 15 and $15 for non-members. Online registration closes on Wednesday, July 2nd at 6pm. Bib pickup will be onsite on race day and will close at 7:30am. There will be no race day registration.
The kids run is open to children who will be in K through 6th grade in the fall (ages 4-12). The 3 mile is open to runners 4 and older and the 10 mile is open to runners over 16.
All races are out and back courses. The park has several small hills with the rest of the course relatively flat.
This year West Texas Endurance introduces the Yankee Doodle Dash and Sparkler Sprint. The Yankee Doodle Dash includes a 1 mile and 5k out and back course. The Sparkler Sprint is a 100 yard dash that is free for kids 6-12. This race start from the intersection of Broadway and Avenue X.
The 5k kicks off the day at 7:30am with the 1 mile following at 7:35am and the Sprinkler Sprint closing out the day at 8:30am.
Registration for this race is $20 for runners 12 and under and $30 for all others. Race day registration will be $35 and will occur at the race site starting at 6:30am. Packet pickup will occur at Cardinals Sports Center on Wednesday July 2nd from 4:00pm-6:00pm and Thursday July 3rd from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. Registration includes your choice of a tank top or t-shirt.
No matter which option you chose, your 4th of July will off to a great start!
