Third suspect in videotaped assault of gay man surrenders

The third Atlanta gang member wanted in the videotaped beating of a 20-year-old gay man has surrendered and is awaiting extradition back to Atlanta.

Mr. Dareal Damare Williams, 17, surrendered to Erie, Pa., police around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, without incident and was arraigned at 11:30 a.m. the next day on Pennsylvania State Fugitive from justice charges, Atlanta police said Thursday.

Mr. Williams was wanted for his part in the Feb. 4 robbery and attack on Mr.  Brandon White outside a neighborhood market in Atlanta’s Pittsburgh community.

FBI agents in Pittsburgh, Pa., said they have been looking for Mr. Williams for a week after he fled Atlanta to hide out in the Erie, Pa., area, where he is believed to have relatives.

They issued an alert Wednesday for that part of western Pennsylvania.

“Williams, a known member of the “Pittsburgh Jack City Gang”, is believed to be staying with friends and relatives in the Erie Area,” officials said. “The “Pittsburgh Jack City Gang” also known as “Jack City 1029” is a violent street gang based out of Atlanta, Georgia.”

Mr. Williams was being held on $250,000 bond at the Erie County Prison as he awaits an extradition hearing, Atlanta police spokesman Officer John Chafee said.

He will likely be extradited to Atlanta sometime next week, Officer Chafee said.

The FBI became involved in the case because federal prosecutors are investigating whether federal hate crime charges should be applied to this case.

Investigators believe Mr. Williams, who is being charged as an adult, is one of three men who punched and kicked Mr. White as well as pummel him with an abandoned car tire before robbing him – all while shouting anti-gay slurs in front of a rolling video camera at 1029 McDaniels St.

The suspects uploaded the footage online, where it caught the attention of law enforcement, police spokesman Mr. Carlos Campos said.

Atlanta police arrested Mr. Christopher Cain, 19, a week after the incident. On Feb. 17, Mr. Dorian Moragne turned himself in to police.

Police said all three teens are members of the so-called "Jack City 1029″ or "Pittsburgh Jack City" gang because of the community they're active in and the address -- 1029 McDaniels St. -- where they hang out.
