A rather unexpected round of snow zipped across north Texas on the morning of January 15. While most areas received less than an inch, portions of Collin and Denton Counties did log up to two inches of snow. There were some travel challenges due to the untimely arrival time of the frozen precip: just before Dallas’ morning rush hour.
A compact but rather intense wave of mid-level energy moved out of Mexico before dawn Tuesday, bringing the snow and even some thunder with it. The surface and upper-air weather data network has much poorer data coverage over northern Mexico which contributed to the “miss” in the forecast.
It was the third measurable snow fall of winter 2012-2013, with DFW logging 0.3”; there was 0.1” recorded on Dec 10, 2012, and a white Christmas with 0.4” reported at DFW on Christmas Day 2012.
