THIRD QUARTER UPDATE: Spartans 3, Trojans 42

Check out the FIRST QUARTER UPDATE and HALFTIME UPDATE for more information.

It was all Joe McKnight to start the third quarter. McKnight rushed three times in the opening drive for 73 yards, capped off by an impressive 54-yard touchdown run.

After the USC running back committee was on cruise mode for most of the first half, Matt Barkley registered his first touchdown pass as a Trojan (one hopes it is the first of many). Barkley completed a four yard pass to tight end Rhett Ellison to put the Trojans up 41-3 (42-3 after the Congdon extra point).

The Spartans started the game off pretty well, moving the ball on screen plays and reverses. However, USC shut them down for much of the second quarter and all of the third quarter.

Quick notes:
- Anthony McCoy needs to work on holding onto the ball when running after the catch.
- The “other” true freshman to watch, Devon Kennard, looks sharp when he is in the game, recording a couple of nice stops in the third quarter.
- Pinkard has a definite size advantage lining up at cornerback, but it remains to be seen if he has enough speed.
- McKnight already surpassed his personal best in rushing yards and it is only the third quarter.
- C.J Gable enters the game, promptly averages ten yards-a-carry.
