Third dog food recall in one week from aflatoxin threat

Bad news evidently does come in threes. Advanced Animal Nutrition has announced a recall of several lots of its dry Dog Power Dog Food. The reason for the recall is aflatoxin levels above the acceptable limit. It was the same concern that prompted recalls by Cargill, which manufactures dry dog food under the Marksman and River Run labels, and  Proctor and Gamble, makers of Iams dry dog food.

The affected products in this latest recall include:

  • Dog Power Adult Maintenance Formula 21-12 Dog Food, 50-pound bags;
  • Dog Power Hunters Formula 27-14 Dog Food, 50-pound bags;
  • Dog Power Hi-Pro Performance Formula 26-18 Dog Food, 50-pound bags.

All products were manufactured between January 4, 2011, and November 18, 2011, and will have Packaging Date Codes in the range from K0004 through K1322.

The affected products were distributed in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri.

Retailers have been instructed to pull the affected brands and products from their shelves. So far no reports of illness have been made.

Advanced Animal Nutrition said that consumers should return affected products, whether opened or unopened, to their place of purchase for a full refund. The company may be reached at 1-866-648-7646.

As noted previously, aflatoxins are toxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. High doses of aflatoxins result in severe liver necrosis. Prolonged low dosages result in reduced growth rate and liver enlargement.
