This is my last Friday afternoon "Things to Do" article. Been busy packing up for our move to Montana tomorrow (could use some help, if you're available). Here are a few suggestions of things to do this weekend and next week.
Season 2 of AXS TV's hit, The World's Greatest Tribute Bands, returns on Monday for three consecutive Mondays to finish out Season Two. Monday's show features the music of Iron Maiden with the all-female tribute band The Iron Maidens. Doors open on Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip, with the show starting promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets are free and are available here
For all you sports fans out there, MLB heads towards the playoffs and the World Series, while the NBA and NFL are almost ready for the new season - can you believe the first game of the season was last night? Check out what our hometown teams (Angels and Dodgers) have created to get you into their stadiums. Where do you like to catch the action, when you're not at the ballpark? Don't forget all the great sports bar in our area, including my favorite, Hooters in Burbank.
Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Patricia Engel will read from It's not Love, It's Just Paris. Then on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., come listen to a panel of YA authors Ann Haydu, Maurene Goo, Stephanie Kuehn and Amy Spaulding, and moderated by Aaron Hartzler. Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some shopping.
It's never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, catch The World's End, screening at 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. The midnight screening is Serenity. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3, check out Afternoon Delight, Blue Jasmine or The Spectacular Now, screening at 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:20 p.m. and 9:40 p.m..
There are also great venues in town to catch the latest indie music. Don't miss these great shows this week:
For something different, stop by Simply Thai on Hillhurst and check out the Tuesday LA Underground Superstars show, featuring four different acts each week as well as the Wednesday and Thursday night music - the food is divine and the music sublime - it's a can't miss combination.
This weekend at the Greek Theatre, catch Michael W. Smith on Sunday night with special guest Nicole Nordeman, starting at 7:30 p.m. Then on Wednesday, it's One Republic and Sara Bareilles, with special guest Harper Blynn, starting at 7:30 p.m.
This week will be rocking at the Hotel Cafe, and I recommend the following shows: Javier Dunn at 8 p.m. on Friday; Kathryn Ostenberg at 7 p.m., followed by Lara Johnston and several other SonicBids artists from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Saturday; NBC The Voice's Dia Frampton continues her residency, this week with special guest Brittany Myers at 7 p.m. on Monday; The Voice's Team Adam member Katrina Parker presents her CD release show at 8 p.m. on Tuesday; Meiko at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and a power-packed Thursday show, including Melissa Polinar at 8 p.m., Sonia Rao's CD release at 9 p.m. and The Mots Noveaux at 10 p.m.
Over at WitZend in Venice, I recommend the following: Michelle Monica at 8 p.m. on Friday; NBC's The Sing-Off contestant Kenton Chen (Kinfolk 9) at 10 p.m. on Saturday; Regrets and No Regrets showcase at 7 p.m. on Monday; Nerd Night at 7 p.m. on Tuesday; and David Lane at 8, Jackie Bristow at 8:20 and Morgan Karr residency at 10 p.m. on Thursday.
If you enjoy the outdoors, don't forget about the local farmers' markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There's also a farmer's market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.
Don't forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube - be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent - then share it with us all.
