Back in the groove, writing my column on a Friday afternoon. Last night's Heart concert was amazing. Looking forward to catching as much music as I can before we move to Missoula, Montana.
Here are a few suggestions of things to do this weekend and next week.
Season 2 of AXS TV's hit, The World's Greatest Tribute Bands, continues with this week's tribute to the music of Bon Jovi with Blaze of Glory: The Bon Jovi Experience. Doors open on Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip, with the show starting promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets are free and are available here
For all you sports fans out there, MLB heads into the home stretch and the NFL and NBA are fully involved in pre-season. Check out what our hometown teams (Angels and Dodgers) have created to get you into their stadiums. Where do you like to catch the action, when you're not at the ballpark? Don't forget all the great sports bar in our area, including my favorite, Hooters in Burbank.
Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. It's a special night on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. as Bass Fest takes over, featuring the music of The Janitor, Jim Brown and Very Beautiful 100% . Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some shopping.
It's never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend, at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3 you can catch Blue Jasmine, Elysium or The Spectacular Now, screening at 1:30, 4:15, 7 and 9:40, as well as Lee Daniels' The Butler, screening at 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, catch The World's End, screening at 1:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.
Plenty of plays out there for all you theater lovers. Check out www.plays411.com and www.Goldstar.com for discounts and listings. If you still haven't reached your fill of the Hollywood Fringe, there are still a few plays ongoing this month. Check em out at www.hollywoodfringe.org.
There are also great venues in town to catch the latest indie music. Don't miss these great shows this week:
FREE show on the Five Towers stage at Universal Citywalk on Saturday night at 7 p.m., featuring two incredible singers from NBC's The Voice: Season 2's Katrina Parker and Season 4's Judith Hill, both of whom were on Team Adam. Come early to ensure you get a good spot.
For something different, stop by Simply Thai on Hillhurst and check out the Tuesday LA Underground Superstars show, featuring four different acts each week as well as the Wednesday and Thursday night music - the food is divine and the music sublime - it's a can't miss combination.
This weekend at the Greek Theatre, catch Heart, with special guest Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, on Friday, starting at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday night, it's Peter Frampton, B.B. King and Sonny Landreth, starting at 7 p.m.
This week at the Hotel Cafe, I recommend the following shows: Javier Dunn at 8 p.m., followed by Shane Alexander at 10 p.m. on Friday; Lara Johnston (daughter of Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers) at 7 p.m. on Saturday; Caroline Ashkar at 9 p.m. on Sunday; The Brother Sal at 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Calico at 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Over at WitZend in Venice, I recommend the following: Elizaveta on Friday at 7 p.m.; Open Mic on Sunday at 7 p.m. and Patrick Dwyer at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
If you enjoy the outdoors, don't forget about the local farmers' markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There's also a farmer's market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.
Don't forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube - be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent - then share it with us all.
