Today I'm headed off to Vegas for the annual Renaissance Faire weekend. Really looking forward to checking out the new digs in Silver Bowl Park, as well as the music of The Wicked Tinkers, Tempest, Lexington Street and others. I'll have a full report on the weekend when I get back.
The music last night at Genghis Cohen was simply great, featuring the CD Release by Boulder-based artist Carrie Clark, along with John Clinebell, Elliott Samuel, Ariana Hall, Ariana Saraha and Jesse Gubberman of Matatu. This week's show will be just as incredible. Details are below.
Movie buffs - relax in one of our local air-conditioned theaters. At the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3, you can catch "Drive" and "50/50," with screenings at 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. or Brad Pitt's latest "Moneyball," with screenings at 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theater, it's the opening of Ryan Gosling's and George Clooney's newest political action thriller, "The Ides of March," with screenings at 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. No midnight showing tonight.
Things are always happening at Skylight Books. Sunday night at 5 p.m., Elissa Schappel will read and sign her new story collection "Blueprints for Building Better Girls." On Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., Luis J. Rodriguez will discuss and sign his new memoir "It Calls You Back." On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Alexander Maksik will read and sign his new novel "You Deserve Nothing." Finally, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Jeffery Euginedes will read and sign his new novel "The Marriage Plot." For more info, check out their website - www.skylightbooks.com.
Life continues at the Steve Allen Theater. This week you can catch "Tomorrow! with Ron Lynch" at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday ($8 general admission, $4 CFI members). On Tuesday at 8 p.m., don't miss the one night only screening of "Women's Picture," hosted by star Ann Magnuson, and preceded by the prequel "Rose" ($10 general admission, $5 CFI members). Go green - catch one of our local Farmers Markets. Barnsdall Arts Park hosts theirs every Wednesday from noon to 7 p.m. in the parking lot off Hollywood Boulevard. For weekend enthusiasts, there's one in the parking lot of the Post Office on Vermont on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Two shows at the Greek Theatre this week. Tonight you can catch one-half of The Highwaymen, as Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson combine for a powerful night of classic country, starting at 8 p.m. On Thursday night at 7:30, it's Daniela Mercury, with special guest Brothers of Brazil. Tomorrow night, the music will flow at the Hotel Cafe, as Rachel Platten, Michael Tolcher and Keaton Simons make a stop on their West Coast Tour. Their show kicks off at 9 p.m . Then on Wednesday night, Whitton rolls into town to celebrate the release of her latest CD. Cory Brown goes on at 8 p.m., followed by Whitton at 9, Leftover Cuties at 10 and AmbeR Rubarth at 11. Don't forget the valet parking for just $6 on the weekend and $5 the rest of the time.
Thursday night at Genghis Cohen, it's a special show with touring artist Matthew Zeltzer, followed by Rory Partin, Estrella Cristina, Joy Autumn, Walk Forever and Samantha Tart, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, or save $2 and pre-pay for your tickets at www.shoutitoutpromo.com/services.
