Things for medical students in the Hershey area to do, both off campus and on campus

Medical school...the words conjure visions of hospitals, white coats, countless hours in the library, and an endless supply of coffee. When someone tells their family and friends that they are going to med school, most people believe that it is similar to undergrad, only with less free time.

However, there is so much more to medical school than being sequestered in a library. In Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Hershey Medical Center (HMC) is home to Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine (PSUCOM). With close to 600 medical students, PSUCOM is a slightly smaller school that is set in rural Pennsylvania. But this unassuming yet state-of-the-art medical center offers so many options to its students. From the many unique and authentic eating venues to outlet shopping to the offerings of Harrisburg, the small town of Hershey has the small-town feel with big-city activities.

The college itself also presents several opportunities for its students. The Student Surgical Society is a great way for future surgeons to get to know each other and learn about new surgical techniques. The Multicultural Awareness Club not only encourages learning about other cultures, but does so in order to raise money for various charities. The club puts on a charity show each year to benefit a specific charity; one of the most popular acts is Bhangra dancing, which is a form of Indian pop dancing that can be fused with almost any other type of dancing. And, being a teaching hospital, there is usually a seminar or guest speaker presenting on a current issue in health care.

And with the Hershey Outlets only 5 minutes away, the city of Harrisburg only 15 minutes away, and the Lancaster Outlets 45 minutes away, med students are never bored on the weekends. The Hershey Outlets include stores such as J.Crew, Calvin Klein, Lane Bryant, and Sag Harbor; Harrisburg includes almost any diversion you can think of, from the National Civil War Museum to Broad Street Market. And in case additional retail therapy is required, the Rockvale Outlets in Lancaster feature Jones New York, Bass Shoes, and Haggar Clothing.

So when exams are over and they have a bit of free time, students at PSUCOM can relax and enjoy all that Hershey and the surrounding area has to offer.
