Things a woman should not do on her first date

See also

Picture this, you are out on your first date with this gorgeous guy you are really into. Should you be nervous? No you shouldn't. The first date is often a getting-to-know-each-other phase that doesn't require a lot of commitment. Really? Yes, you read that right. Your first date can best compared to the delicate chess of game in which a wrong move could be costly. That being said, it's only fair that I mention things not to do on a first date.

Don't spend too much time on your first date - a coffee date should do

Dating experts suggest that a person should not commit to a first date that takes more than 30 minutes and what would be a great way of doing this than arranging for a coffee date? This is just a precautionary measure that protects you from getting stuck with a douche bag who would otherwise waste your valuable time. If the coffee date goes well and you guys hit it off, it's easy to get the guy to commit to drinks or dinner. Here's the secret, break the ground by saying something cute like, 'I'm hungry.' Your date should be able to get the cue to invite you out.

Don't suggest a movie for your first date

Whoever came up with the idea that movies make a great first date was nuts. Let's be serious - whenever you are out for a movie date (a first one for that matter), you barely interact with each other as your ears and eyes are glued to the screen. Please do not misquote me; movie dates should be reserved for folks who have been seeing each other for a while. Always remember that your first date is for getting to know each other.

Stop scrolling or swiping your phone

It is horribly annoying when one tries to have a conversation with their date only for them to keep chatting or scrolling through their phone. This is very rude. Be engaging and responsive and if possible, keep that offending piece of technology out of sight albeit for as long as your first date lasts. If you must plop it on the table, make sure it is on silent mode and put if face-down. Let's just face it; no matter how fascinated you are with your date, a light blinking out of the corner of your eye alerting you of a received text message will distract you. One more thing, if you must take a call, apologize before you do so. Never hold your finger to silence him; he's not a dog.

Don't show up late

Here is a simple rule that thou shall abide by - be at your appointed meeting place at least 5 minutes early. Trust you me, your date wouldn't take it too kindly that you made him wait for 20 minutes. Arriving early for your rendezvous gives you the perfect chance to seat yourself in a comfortable spot. Chances are, your fist date is just as nerve-wrecking for him as it is for you and for him to walk in only to be greeted by you naturally alleviates the anxiety-inducing concern: will he show up?

Never talk about your ex's

It has been said countless times that you should never talk about three things on your first date - religion, politics and your past flames. There are many other talking points you could focus on other than these three. For example, you could talk about other aspects of you life like hobbies, favorite music etc. Honesty is always good so take this chance to let your potential beau know that you're human and have quirks just like everybody does.

Give him a chance to talk

The question ration should be 1:1. if he asks a question, answer it then reciprocate your response with a question as well. As much as you would like to rant about your escapades with your girlfriends, don't do it on your first date. It isn't always funny for your date to hear during your date what you and your friends did. Chances are that A) he does not know any of your girlfriends, and B) the stories may not be as funny as you think that they are. Let him say a thing or two about himself so that you get to know him better.

The list of don't do's is endless but for now, the ones mentioned should do.
