Thigh gap obsession: Teen struggle for thigh gap can lead to eating disorders

A thigh gap obsession has become the latest teen beauty trend, which can lead to body image issues and eating disorders according to a report out of FOX News NY on Tuesday. A thigh gap is a clear space at the top of the legs.

Proponents of the thigh gap are teenage girls competing with one another to maintain a thin frame. Social Media such as Tumblr and Twitter are inundated with images of thigh gaps along with drastically differing opinions on the unsightliness and health of obtaining a thigh gap. Caras Thigh Gap is a Twitter page completely devoted to model Cara Delevingne’ s space between her legs.

Many comments and photos are against the thigh gap, but despite reports that this may turn into unhealthy eating habits and low self-esteem; teen girls are still obsessing over obtaining that space. As a teen, and yes, I am breaking writing rules and dating myself, a thigh gap or a space between the legs and knees referred to a sexually active girl or one who was bowlegged. While there is nothing wrong with any body type, it wasn’t an image teens strived for.

The FOX New York News report interviewed girls who stated it isn’t attractive to have the thighs touch or rub together because it is a turn off: a turn off to whom? Young teens shouldn’t attempt to turn anyone on.

Dr. Connie Quinn of The Renfrew Center, specializing in eating disorders, is alarmed at this latest beauty trend.

It presents the image of this is who I am, I am only the sum of my thigh gap, I am nothing else, I'm not a daughter, friend, a student, I am this thigh gap. It's very sad.

Parents, please discuss thigh gap obsession with your teenager. Skinny, thin, overweight, fat, thighs that touch, flabby abs, abs of steel, bowlegs, round shoulders, ribs that stick out or junk in the trunk matters not! Everyone’s body and body type is different. What is important is to love the skin you are in and be healthy. A physician, not photos of thigh gaps on Instagram, should determine what is healthy for your height and frame. And if you naturally have a thigh gap, well then good for you, but it shouldn’t become an unhealthy unobtainable obsession for others and it shouldn’t be labeled unattractive either.
