The Huffington Post reports a story about three people who face criminal charges for stealing an imitation pair of ruby slippers similar to the pair worn by Dorothy on the Wizard of Oz. The thieves stole the replica pair from the Hilton Garden Inn lobby in Staten Island, N.Y.

Authorities charged Julie Walker-Merkle, 39, Joseph Cipoletti, 58 and Ronald Geraghty, for the theft. A defense attorney representing Merkle and Cipoletti said the incident was a prank. Apparently they wanted to dance in the ruby slippers.

After the trio unsuccessfully tried to enter the rooftop bar, they exited the elevator on the sixth floor. A surveillance camera captured Merkle wearing the slippers. The three successfully left the hotel with the slippers. Eventually, Merkle’s father returned the lifted ruby slippers to the hotel minus a bow on one of the slippers.

Authorities have charged Merkle and Cipoletti with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal mischief. Geraghty will face grand larceny charges. The criminal trio has a court date on May 16.
