Many people want to suspend the right to bear arms, to restrict guns only to the military and law enforcement, actually believing that the government has the right to do so. They desire to do so under the banner of taking guns out of the hands of drug dealers and other criminals, and such logic gains widespread support.
The liberals have misinterpreted the word militia in the Second Amendment to mean the Army. Thus this Amendment is about allowing the Army to have guns and the notion that citizens are to be armed is a false interpretation.
The Militia and the Army are two different things. The Militia is the armed citizenry, the Minutemen of Revolutionary times were the Militia. Many people fail to understand our Founding Father’s reasoning for having an armed citizenry.
The purpose of the Second Amendment is twofold. First, an armed citizenry will insure that the U.S. Government never turns against its citizens. The Constitution can, and has been, eroded by Congress and various Presidents. Our Founding Fathers saw the possibilities of it being completely abolished and replaced by a tyrannical government. The Second Amendment will guarantee that this never happens.
The other purpose of the Second Amendment is to insure that America will never be invaded. Not only would an invading Army have to face our military, they would have to face the armed citizenry or militia as well. This worked well for George Washington during the Revolutionary War.
We can’t loss sight of the reasons why our Founding Fathers gave us the Second Amendment. We can’t let popular and temporary things such as armed drug dealers cloud our minds and cause us to loss sight of this fundamental right granted to American citizens. To loss sight of this truth is to surrender our guns, and to surrender our guns is to surrender our liberty.
