First published in 1952 as the sixth installment of the enchanting Miss Marple series, ‘They Do It With Mirrors,’ is a captivating and thrilling mystery.
The beginning of the novel finds Miss Marple being asked by an old friend Ruth to visit her sister Carrie Louise and possibly ferret out anything dubious occurring at Stonygates, a rehabilitation house for boys.
Miss Marple is enjoying her stay visiting with old friends, and observing the inner workers of Stonygates. Unfortunately it does not take long for Miss Marple to discover curious events, her suspicions are confirmed when Christian, Carrie Louise’s stepson and Stony gates trustee is shot dead.
Christian’s murder occurs during an equally disturbing instance when a paranoid former patient named Edgar of Carrie’s husband locks the two of them in a room and proceeds to fire off a gun.
Before long more murders occur, and subsequently remind Miss Marple of the illusions magicians use.
Is everything at Stonygates as it seems, or is Miss Marple surrounded by deception?
