As the Magic party at PAX draws to a close, one more major spoiler has come out of it, and it might be one of the coolest cards of the night. The red god, Purphoros, lord of the forge, who represents the creative and inspired emotions rather than the usual "red = anger" associations, has already become something of a fan favorite, especially among those who enjoy Magic's flavor and background lore. The legendary enchantment artifact associated with him, the hammer Akmon, definitely did not disappoint. Here's the true power of Hammer of Purphoros:
Hammer of Purphoros 1RR
Legendary Enchantment Artifact (R)
Creatures you control have haste.
2R, Tap, Sacrifice a land: Put a 3/3 colorless Golem enchantment artifact creature token onto the battlefield.
All the world is Purphoros's anvil.
Given the description of Akmon as bringing flecks of raw magic to life, many correctly speculated that Purphoros's artifact would make creature tokens. Well, it's definitely got a hell of a token-making ability - the potential for a 3/3 every turn is insanely good, hemmed in slightly by the fact that it costs both mana and a land sacrifice, meaning you have to essentially have at least three lands to use it. The static ability would be worth three mana on its own - Fervor sees play. The fact that those Golem tokens are enchantment artifact creatures is also, if nothing else, something that will be delightful to see on the typeline of the printed tokens. The lore is right - Purphoros's artifact does pair well with Nylea and hers. Unstoppable Golem armies are better than lousy mana-making lands anyhow.
What do you think of Purphoros's fearsome weapon? Let me know in the comments.
