The gods of Theros are one of the set's main hooks - larger-than-life personas of incredible magical potence who take the form of living enchantments, descended from their true home in the dream realm of Nyx to intervene in the lives of mortals. So far, we only knew about the sea deity Thassa, but of course, the PAX Magic party could hardly call itself a party if it didn't show off another one. Lo and behold, we have a preview of Nylea, the green god:
Nylea, God of the Hunt 3G
Legendary Enchantment Creature - God (Mythic)
As long as your devotion to green is less than five, Nylea isn't a creature. (Each G in the mana costs of permanents you control counts towards your devotion to green.)
Other creatures you control have trample.
3G: Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
The violently environmentalist Nylea is quite the archery enthusiast, but this card doesn't make any reference to that aspect of her character - not that I'm complaining. It seems as though the gods' activated abilities will all be beneficial in some way and target a creature, if the two we have thus far are any indication. I also like the parallelism between both the gods and their weapons having one static (okay, other than those top two lines) and one activated ability. R&D also has done a good job of making the gods synergistic with their sacred artifacts; in Nylea's case, they grant the combination of deathtouch and trample, which are two abilities that have an insanely good interaction. The great thing about Nylea is that she's strong even when she's not in creature form, but then once you get your devotion high enough she can absolutely wreck things - although she's best with several other creatures to both pump and give trample to. I'd use her with the Naya cards from Shards of Alara block that care about creatures with power 5 or greater.
What do you think of the imposing green god? Let me know in the comments.
