The group of Theros creatures we haven't seen much of at the PAX Magic party so far - or indeed, at all - is its monsters. Now, with this latest spoiled card, they, or at least one monster creature type, are getting some love in the form of an efficient lord who's no slouch in the stats department itself. Here's Rageblood Shaman:
Rageblood Shaman 1RR
Creature - Minotaur Shaman (Rare)
Other Minotaur creatures you control get +1/+1 and have trample.
"I see a spark of pure rage. Soon that spark will spread from the depths of Kragma. Soon its fire will engulf the polis."
—Hira, street oracle
The fact that red is getting a 2/3 for 1RR may seem a little odd, but in reality it's a callback to the original hornhead - Hurloon Minotaur. The trample is just icing on the cake, and insult to injury when your opponents are forced to block this with a 1/1 because your other Minotaurs are so much bigger and tramply to boot. A lord this strong would be unheard of back in the day - used to be the template was a 2/2 for 1CC that didn't have any abilities other than its tribe-boosting one. My, how times have changed - even in a deck with a mere couple of Minotaurs this is very solid turn three in any context. With many Minotaurs to pump, then things start getting ugly.
The polis referenced in the flavor text is probably Akros - and Kragma appears to be a volcano!
Also, this is apparently not the only Minotaur lord in the set - Mark Rosewater promised a multicolor one as well, which means Minotaur tribal is, like the R&D members at the San Diego Comic-Con panel, a significant minor theme in Theros block.
What do you think of this stompy Minotaur booster? Let me know in the comments.
