StarCityGames.com is one of the most widely-used online services for buying Magic cards, so it's not surprising that they're often given a few exclusive cards each set to preview, as a way of driving preorders. For Theros, one of their preview cards is something which some rumor community members were wondering how R&D would convey the flavor of - a rare, monoblack "hero." Here's Agent of the Fates.
Agent of the Fates 1BB
Creature - Human Assassin (Rare)
Heroic - Whenever you cast a spell that targets Agent of the Fates, each opponent sacrifices a creature.
"You are breathing borrowed air."
This card does a good job of making the flavor of a hero from the most stereotypically evil color of Magic feel right, and does it with some badass flavor text too. Black, as represented in Theros, does seem to be a color that has to do with resignation to fate - and that's not necessarily a bad thing. This particular card is very efficient at giving Erebos more residents for his kingdom - deathtouch is excellent evasion (that relatively fragile toughness means this guy will be used offensively more often than defensively, although targeting him with spells that give him first strike make him a truly magnificent blocker), and that scary, scary heroic ability means that pumping him also gets potential blockers out of the way. Left unchecked (hot tip: putting Auras like, say, the lowly Alpha Authority on him makes him hard to deal with), Agent of the Fates is practically a three-mana Plague Wind that also swings.
What do you think of this murderous hero? Let me know in the comments.
