Last block, fans of the white-black Orzhov Syndicate guild were disappointed that one of the guild's most powerful and recognizable cards, Angel of Despair, wasn't reprinted. Now, thanks to a preview by the Greek Magic site (how appropriate for Theros) topdecker.gr, we know why - it's because this set brings an even scarier version in the form of the game's first white and black Archon. Feast your eyes on Ashen Rider.
Ashen Rider 4WWBB
Creature - Archon (Mythic)
When Ashen Rider enters the battlefield or dies, exile target permanent.
One offering to appease her on her arrival. Another to celebrate her departure.
Yes, you read that right. Interestingly, whereas previous Archons have been male or of indeterminate gender, the art and flavor text on Ashen Rider confirms it as explicitly female. This mythic bad mother has the same stats as Angel of Despair - 5/5 flying - but for one mana more, she exiles instead of destroying permanents, and she gets to do it when she dies as well as when she enters the battlefield. In other words, the ETB trigger is going to be just as abused with blink effects as her predecessor's was, and when the time comes to beat face with this one, your opponents are going to be much more reluctant to use non-exiling hard removal on her or to block her with anything not a chump. Eight mana - four of which is WWBB - is a hell of a steep price tag, which puts this as an awesome EDH card that'll be much harder to use in any other format. Still, it'll be all worth it to sacrifice this to Rescue from the Underworld, reanimate another finisher, and exile two target permanents in the process!
What do you think of this board-clearing mythic? Let me know in the comments.
