Well it's that time of year again. Theros becomes legal for all formats on September 20th as it pushes out the Innistrad block out of Standard. This means that Magic is completely refreshing once again. Seeing as we are all going to be drafting the set for the next five months, and the fact that it's Sealed PTQ season means that we are going to have to take a cold hard look at the set. Join me now as I go card by card in my reviews.
Agent of Horrizons – 2G – Creature – Human Rogue – C – 2U: Agent of Horizons can't be blocked this turn. 3/2. It's good in Limited but too much of a mana sink to be good in any other format.
Anthousa, Setessan Hero – 3GG – Legendary Creature – Human Warrior – R – Heroic – Whenver you cast a spell that targets Anthousa, Setessan Hero, up to three target lands you control each become 2/2 Warrior creature until end of turn. They're still lands. 4/5. Not that bad for Limited when you can play the beat down deck.
Arbor Colossus – 2GGG – Creature – Giant – R – Reach. 3GGG: Monstrosity 3. When Arbor Colossus becomes monstrous, destroy target creature with flying an opponent controls. 6/6. Hmm, you know that's not bad for Limited. It can block and kill just about anything and if you make your land drop the next turn you get to nuke a flier out of the air. Not bad at all.
Artisan's Sorrow – 3G – Instant – U – Destroy target artifact or enchantment. Scry 2. Again, with the Nyx cards in the mix this becomes creature removal as well in Limited, and with scry 2, this is really nice.
Boon Satyr – 1GG – Enchantment Creature – Satyr – R – Flash. Bestow 3GG. Enchanted creature gets +4/+2. 4/2. That has to be the lowest of the bestow cost and it has flash... calling it now this is the best of the bestow dorks and might just see Constructed play.
Bow of Nylea – 1GG – Legendary Enchantment Artifact – R – Attacking creature you control have deathtouch. 1G, tap: Choose one – Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature; or Bow of Nylea deals 2 damage to target creature with flying; or you gain 3 life; or put up to four target cards from your graveyard on the bottom of your library in any order. This is like Jitte levels of crazy. Pump a dude, kill a flier, gain some life, or recycle cards... all are nice options in Limited and I can see this being a Constructed card just to make use of a few of the abilities. Oh, and all your dude will kill anything they block or get blocked by.
Centaur Battlemaster – 3GG – Creature – Centaur Warrior – U – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Centaur Battlemaster, put three +1/+1 counters on Centaur Battlemaster. 3/3. Kill this in Limited or it will kill you. Hell this might just get played in some kind of Gruul aura deck in Standard. Madcap Skills into removal for one blocker, take 9, GG?
Commune with the Gods – 1G – Sorcery - C – Reveal the top five cards of your library. You may put a creature or enchantment card from among them into your hand. Put the rest into your graveyard. Just when you all thought graveyard decks were gone we get this boon to the Golgari tribe. In Limited it's a good digger to get your best dork or the enchantment you need. I just think that we are going to see this in Standard with some Scavenge goodness.
Defend the Hearth – 1G – Instant – C – Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to players this turn. Well here's the fog effect for Limited.
Fade into Antiquity – 2G – Sorcery – C - Exile target artifact of enchantment. So that's how you deal with a troublesome god. Might see some sideboard love if we have a lot of troublesome gods to deal with.
Feral Invocation – 2G – Enchantment – Aura – C – Flash. Enchant creature. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2. Combat trick that is also an aura in a Limited format were both are good.
Hunt the Hunter – G – Sorcery – U – Target green creature you control gets +2/+2 until end of turn. It fights target green creature an opponent controls. I have to say that this is the worst of the self hate cycle of cards. All it is good for is sideboard filler in Limited.
Karaketra's Acolyte – 3G – Creature – Human Druid – U – Tap: Add an amount of G to your mana pool equal to your devotion to green. ¼. You know if any color ends up being able to make the most use out of Monstrosity it's going to be with the help of green's mana ramp. Still only good in Limited as this will just eat removal all day long as you fall behind on the board.
Leafcrown Dryad – 1G – Enchantment Creature – Nymph Dryad - C – Bestow 3G. Reach. Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has reach. 2/2. That's not bad for Limited. Most of the time your Reach dudes will get eaten or trade in blocks but this allows you to rest with an fresh blocker.
Mistcutter Hydra – XG – Creature – Hydra – R – Mistcutter Hydra can't be countered. Hast, protection from blue. Mistcutter Hydra enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. 0/0. Wait a haste hydra that can't be countered? I so want this for the all hydra plus Corpsejack deck. Drop this turn five with Jack out, bam, 8/8 haste into the red zone. I know it's a pipe dream, but still in Limited when your opponent has no blockers late game this is going to be an awesome top deck.
Nemesis of Mortals 4GG – Creature – Snake – U – Nemesis of Mortals cost 1 less to cast for each creature card in your graveyard. 7GG: Monstrosity 5. This ability cost 1 less to activate for each creature in your graveyard. 5/5. I think I need new pants. This and Jarad with seven dude in the yard total awesome-sauce. Oh my god, brewer overload. This is going to be awesome in Limited where you have been trading dudes away and Communing with the God... oh, so much love for this card.
Nessian Asp – 4G – Creature – Snake – C – Reach. 6G: Monstrosity 4. 4/5. Not a bad monster for Limited. Has reach turns into a nasty beater later on. I think the reason I was hating on the Monstrous creatures before is they all had odd abilities for limited.
Nessian Courser – 2G – Creature – Centaur Warrior – C – 3/3. Sometimes you just need a 3/3 for three mana in Limited.
Nylea, God of the Hunt – 3G – Legendary Enchantment Creature – God – M – Indestructible. As long as your devotion to green is less than five, Nylea isn't a creature. Other creatures you control have trample. 3G: Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. 6/6. Already pre-ordered a copy of this for my post-rotation deck. It gives trample and pumps dorks which makes it great in Limited and if you can abuse it in Constructed it's going to be great.
Nylea's Disciple – 2GG – Creature – Centaur Archer – C – When Nylea's Disciple enters the battlefield, you gain life equal to your devotion to green. 3/3. Not bad, it does what green does when it wants a common enters the battlefield trigger, it gains you life. This in Limited is going to really help turn the tides of battle.
Nylea's Emissary – 3G – Enchantment Creature – Cat – U – Bestow 5G. Trample. Enchanted creature gets +3/+3 and has trample. 3/3. Again, not bad in Limited. Green likes to overrun things and with each color having a number of weenies the is going to be running them over even if you just cast it as a dude.
Nylea's Presence – 1G – Enchantment – Aura – C – Enchant Land. When Nylea's Presence enters the battlefield, draw a card. Enchanted land is every basic land type in addition to its other types. Okay so it draws a card and is mana fixing which this set is very lite on because it wants you to be devoted to a set color instead of running three in Limited. I just wish it was creature enchant like the rest of the cycle.
Ordeal of Nylea – 1G – Enchantment – Aura – U – Enchant creature. Whenever enchanted creature attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Then if it has three or more +1/+1 counters on it, sacrifice Ordeal of Nylea. When you sacrifice Ordeal of Nylea, search your library for up to two basic land cards, put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle your library. Yes, it's mana fixing, but it's just not as powerful as the rest of the cycle. Maybe just a good card in Limited for Monstrosity decks so that you can ramp into those fatties and use their abilities. Yeah, that's what I see this card being used for in the near future.
Pheres-Band Cnetaurs – 4G – Creature Centaur Warrior – C – 3/7. Just a vanilla dork for Limited that seems to be able to do a lot of blocking.
Polukranos, World Eater – 2GG – Legendary Creature – Hydra – M – XXG: Monstrosity X. When Polukranos, World Eater becomes monstrous, it deals X damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures you opponents control. Each of those creatures deals damage equal to it's power to Polukranos. 5/5. Yeah, the wording on this makes it just about useless out side of Commander. I mean yes, I could try to add it to the Corpsejack & Hydra deck but I want it to be a nuke instead of just a small bomb. Still in Limited it's removal that can hurt your opponent. Without a broken way to ramp to ungodly mana this just feels to fair to be mythic.
Reverent Hunter – 2G – Creature – Human Archer – R – When Reverent Hunter enters the battlefield, put a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to your devotion to green. 1/1. This I would put in the Corpsejack deck. Still the Corpsejack deck is just a casual deck for fun. Granted in Limited this is going to be nice... At the least you are getting a 2/2, but if you have hit another green drop it's a 3/3. Late game it could be a really crazy big fatty.
Satyr Hedonist – 1G – Creature – Satyr – C – R, sacrifice Satyr Hedonist: Add RRR to your mana pool. 2/1. I think they printed this for fast mana but had to make it odd so that they didn't unbalance storm decks with a new card or give you some six draft deck which would let you chain mana spells into a huge monstrosity. So yeah, nerd to the point that it works in Gruul Monstrosity draft decks.
Satyr Piper – 2G – Creature – Satyr Rogue – U – 3G: Target creature must be blocked this turn if able. 2/1. Nice combat trick dork for Limited as it forced you opponent to have to make a bad block such as throwing a dude under the bus of your deathtouch or just fat beater.
Savage Surge – 1G – Instant – C – Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn. Untap that creature. Wolverine, shinkt,ty, shinkt! Loving this in Limited as this can make you opponent just walk into a tapped heroic dude.
Sedge Scorpion – G – Creature – Scorpion – C – Deathtouch. 1/1. Get over here! I love how creatures like this basically are unblockable in Limited then you can pump the hell out of them and then they become the kind of creature that other creatures have to be thrown under until your opponent finds a removal spell.
Shredding Winds – 2G – Instant – C – Shredding Winds deals 7 damage to target creature with flying. That's some narrow but effective flying hate for Limited. Honestly, I kind of want to just cast this and name the targets creature type as I say, “in a blender!” because that's about how this is going to feel.
Staunch-Hearted Warrior – 3G – Creature – Human Warrior – C – Heroic – Whenever you cast a spell that targets Staunch-Hearted Warrior, put two +1/+1 counters on Staunch-Hearted Warrior. 2/2. I so want to alter this into Wolverine. Honestly, it just seems like the kind of ability he would have. Awesome in Limited.
Sylvan Caryatid – 1G – Creature – Plant – R – Defender, hexproof. Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. 0/3. Hexproof mana dork. Yeah, I already bought my playset for Constructed. Killing early game mana dorks is always a good idea because not only does it set your opponent back on their ramping it also blanks there turn. This having hexproof just changes the game as you can cast this without fear of it eating removal when you opponent untaps.
Time to Feed – 2G – Sorcery – C – Choose target creature an opponent controls. When that creature dies this turn, you gain 3 life. Target creature you control fights that creature. This feels like it needs an alter to have a guy pointing a baseball bat out to left field. Best removal for Limited in the set. My dude eats your dude, I get three life. This is also a three drop so you know it's within the range for getting played in Standard.
Voyaging Satyr – 1G – Creature – Satyr Druid – C – Tap: Untap target land. ½. It's a nice mana ramping dork for Limited. Not too overpowered and works great with the rare lands in the set.
Vulpine Goliath – 4GG – Creature Fox – C – Trample. 6/5. I like that it's just this really huge fox. So often we get these odd random fatties that it's always cool to see normal creature made huge. The fact that it has trample is very nice for Limited where I plan to feed many faces to this cute fox
Warrior's Lesson – G – Instant – U – Until end of turn, up to two target creature you control each gain “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.” Okay so this is really, realy good in Limited with either Red or Blue... Heck we have the duals so you can try to be that dude and play RUG in Limited if your lucky. Just going in on the Green splash because you managed to crack a few of these in Limited is going to be nice.
Over all I have to say that Green is looking strong in Limited and I have to say it got a number of the best Constructed cards as well. Personally, I think we are in for a Green winter as Junk, Golgari, Gruul, BUG, and RUG decks start to get fine tuned. We got just one more section to get through and we are all set with Theros Reviews. I'm out of here so I can get started on the rest of the cards. This has been...
