During "Theros" game day events on Oct. 19-20, 2013 "Magic: The Gathering" players can complete the third quest in the "Hero's Path" to earn the special hero card The Slayer when they defeat the hydra. The slayer lets you begin the game with seven extra life. Those additional life points will come in handy when you face other challenge decks throughout the block.
The Slayer
Hero (Common)
You start the game with an additional 7 life.
It's a pretty safe bet that other challenges will be monsters as well. Because the hydra doesn't have a normal life total (it has heads instead), cards like Blood Baron Vizkopa that refer to your opponent's life total lose a bit of their value. Although Master of Cruelties won't be able to reduce the hydra's life total to one, it can kill any head no matter how big it may be thanks to the awesome combination of first strike and deathtouch.
While it's currently unclear how future challenges will work, you can bet that they'll become harder as more hero cards are released. Every extra point of life will matter when you're fighting fearsome threats and the odds are stacked up against you. The hydra begins with two heads when played on easy and three on medium. Will you be able to defeat the hydra on the mighty hard mode with four heads? You'll probably need The Slayer in order to do so.
How will you use The Slayer?
