For many, the mere mention of the word “vegetarian” shuts the brain down and the appetite off. But at Seva Detroit, things are done a little differently than your average veggie hangout.
Inconspicuously tucked in at 66 E. Forest Street in the heart of Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, this meatless wonder is a rare find in the culinary landscape of Motown.
The entire menu is meat-free, with many items available vegan style. But don’t let that scare you – the appetizers, sandwiches and entrees that have been developed are so flavorful and satisfying, you won’t even miss the carcass around which our American fare has so lovingly revolved.
To start things off, “General Tso’s Cauliflower” is a fresh spin on a Chinese food classic. Rather than deep-fried glazed chicken, Seva flavors cauliflower with everything we love about the Asian dish, and garnishes it with sesame seeds and scallions. Yam fries with spicy mayo or vegan BBQ is the best alternative to French fries out there. And the roasted red pepper hummus comes as an appetizer with crackers or in a wrap as a sandwich.
The salads are a star all their own, with a peanut-kale variety served with peanut-cider marinade that will change your outlook on the hearty leafy green forever. There are several other choices, with dressings like vegan creamy dill and smoky maple.
The extra-interesting portion of the menu comes into play with the sandwiches: mushroom sliders, the club with smoked coconut and avocado, a TLT with tempeh, and a grilled pesto pizza featuring smoked mozzarella and basil-cashew pesto.
Many of the entrees have a Mexican flare, and there is even a section devoted to eggs and tofu – especially tasty during their Sunday brunch, served from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
During happy hour (Monday through Friday, 4-7), Seva features specials on small plates, often including their to-die-for Gouda tots, which you could swear were fried in bacon grease.
In addition to delicious and affordable food, Seva has a full bar, juice bar, espresso bar, and a slew of Michigan beers, and throughout the week there are drink specials – not just during happy hour. On Mondays enjoy margaritas by the glass or the pitcher; Tuesdays feature specials on several of Seva’s fantastic wines, and Wednesdays offer draft beer at half price.
To put the cherry on top of this delicious veggie cake, a gluten-free menu, a kid’s menu, and a dessert menu are also available.
Before turning your nose up at the idea of going meatless, give Seva a whirl. Its industrial and modern interior coupled with a secluded-yet-urban outdoor patio will welcome you with open vegan arms.
