There's some green on the Chicago horizon thanks to Project Eco-Friendly (Photos)

It’s cold now but spring and spring-cleaning are just around the corner as is Project Eco-Friendly from Golan's Moving and Storage. From March 23 to April 20, the Chicago moving company will pick up unwanted cell phones, printers, cartridges, scanners, hard drives, and old light bulbs and deliver these items to the City of Chicago Computer Recycling Facility—for free!

Best of all, Project Eco-Friendly participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of three compost bins, courtesy of Golan s Moving.

“Golan's offered this promotion in 2010 with great success,” explains Naftali Garber, Sales and Marketing Coordinator for Golan's Moving and Storage, Inc. “We were able to deliver over 500 cubic-feet of recyclable waste to the Chicago facility. Customers were very appreciative of our efforts to assist them in spring cleaning and our commitment to recycling and the environment.

“Being green has always been important to Golan's for many reasons—we are more than just a green truck. Given that we work in the transportation industry, we inherently pollute the environment; because of this, we have always felt that it is important to help preserve our natural resources in every other way possible. Preserving our natural resources is a belief that was brought about by the ownership from their love of the outdoors and environment around us.”

To participate, Cook County residents should email recycle@golansmoving.com with their pick-up address. Golan's will reply with the exact day for pick-up. Then place your items on your front porch by 7:00 am, and Golan’s will take them to the recycling center at no cost to you.

Receipts of the drop-off are not available. Large household appliances such as televisions, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and large home appliances cannot be picked up. No more than five items will be picked up from a single location.

In addition to Project Eco-Friendly, Golan's has a range of green practices. As Garber notes, “A great success has been our box recycling program: customers who no longer need their moving receive free pickup; we then offer them as used boxes to other customers. If the boxes are no longer in shape to be used, we recycle them internally.

“Through a partnership with Lakeshore Waste, Golan's recycles over 10,000 pounds of waste each month. Another green practice is our fleet of highly efficient Mitsubishi trucks, we get the best mileage we can from our diesel! On the horizon is acquiring the newest hybrid energy trucks which will allow us to lighten our carbon footprint even further.”
