There is no nail cheese at your dog park

Have you heard? There are nails wrapped in cheese at your local dog park! There’s antifreeze in the water bowls! Owners beware!

Just in time for Halloween, this doggy “ghost story” has spread around the web like wildfire over the past few days. Citing findings of killer cheese in dog parks in Chicago and Massachusetts, the warnings beg the reader to forward the note to all dog lovers.

Unfortunately, none of that is true. A simple web search will turn up the real story.  In July, a dog walker in Buesnos Aires, Argentina found the nail cheese on the floor of a kennel. There were no reports of any dogs ingesting said cheese, or being injured. There are no confirmed reports of nail cheese anywhere in the US and there are no confirmed reports of dog bowls full of antifreeze at dog parks in the states either.

While both these stories could happen, the key is that they haven’t. Keep a close eye on your dog at the park is always a good idea, and if you see him eating something, check it out. Always dump out standing water from dog park bowls. If it’s antifreeze, now it’s gone, but more likely, it’s just dirty and gross and your dog will appreciate something fresher. Mostly, do research on stories you hear and don’t pass them around if you haven’t. The last thing we all need is something extra to be worried about.
