There is more to the command "You shall not murder" than the taking of another man's life

"You shall not murder," (Exodus 20:13) is the sixth commandment God gives to Moses at Mt. Sinai. The principle behind this commandment is that human life is holy, because it is a gift from God. This commandment defines murder as the malicious and unlawful killing of another man who has been made in God's image.

Life is precious in God's sight. He alone creates it and ends it according to his will and plan. Because of this, the sixth commandment prohibits cruelty or violence that could weaken or shorten a man's life, including abortion, suicide, and euthanasia, all of which cut life short.

Followers of God can obey this commandment by not only avoiding murder, but also by turning away from any malice in their hearts that wishes to tear others down or see them in trouble or pain. Believers honor God by recognizing and respecting his image in others and by seeking to further the welfare of their fellow man.

Hi: I follow your articles and agree with everything you write as I am a Christian also. My husband took his own life last year and the devastation to our family is not tellable in words; but I want to say that he was a Christian also and he knew where he would spend eternity. God's word says whosoever believes in Him shall have everlasting life - and then there is a period at the end - and it does not say unless....... Our salvation is not based on what we do but on what Christ did on the cross. There sometimes comes situations in our lives when we actually lose control of our right minds and in that second, we can make terrible decisions. But I know that my husband is in heaven as he believed in God and Christ with all his heart - he would never even use the Lord's name in vain. Somethings we will just not be able to understand until we are all in heaven with Christ. Thank you so much for what you write to inspire others.
