If you’re lucky enough to have a child who is a reader by nature, you may have little trouble convincing them to read new books. For some lucky parents, the trouble is getting the book away from the child, not convincing them to read another one! On the other hand, some children are picky readers. They may be attached to a particular genre and convinced that nothing outside it could ever possibly be worthwhile, or they may be the type of child to quite literally judge a book by its cover—deciding whether or not they want to read a book based almost entirely on what it looks like. How do you get these picky readers to branch out into other areas?
One fun way is to have a book party. If you’re looking at a series of books, tell your child that when they have completed a certain number of the books (the first one, the first three, or the entire series—that’s up to you!), you will have a party based on the book. Make sure you’re prepared to follow through! Decide ahead of time, with your child or children, whether this will be a family party—a fun way that you will spend one of your homeschooling days—or a party that will include other people. Then, let your creativity run wild!
Be sure to let your child help with the creative part of the party planning. They might surprise you and come with ideas that you’d never even thought of! However, you’ll want to have a basic outline for the party long before they come to you and tell you that you’ve finished the book. Otherwise, all the planning will be last-minute, and finding materials that you need may be difficult.
Book parties don’t have to be expensive, either. Look around and see what you have available before you start planning—you might be surprised! Take a Harry Potter themed party, for example. This one was thrown with children who are already in love with the Harry Potter series. They’ve read all the books, seen all the movies, and have a number of Harry Potter goodies already around the house—so with a little creativity, this particular party cost almost nothing!
