Get ready to kick up your heels, dance, and go Footloose as Theatre Lawrence kicks off its 37th season with Footloose: The Musical, based on the popular movie of the same name, beginning Sept. 20.
The much anticipated Broadway show based on the popular 1980s musical features music from the original movie, including “Holding on for a Hero,” “Almost Paradise” and the signature hit “Footloose.” The show is based on the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford, with music by Tom Snow; stage adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie with lyrics by Dean Pitchford and additional music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman.
When a high-school student, Ren, (newcomer Jacob Coons), moves with his mother, (Robin Michael), from Chicago to a small Midwest town, his life changes as he confronts a closed-minded society where past pains and wounds never heal. He thinks adjustment comes easy, but learn otherwise because small towns work differently from major metropolitan cities. He finds that loud music and dancing violate the peace of the town and that a local pastor’s influence squelches any dancing and progressive. His association with the radical pastor, Reverend Shaw Moore (newcomer Jim Hurd), coupled with his attraction for the Reverend's high-spirited daughter, Ariel (newcomer Noelle Olsen), complicate his life. Other key characters are the reverend's wife, played by Erin Fox; Ren's best friend Willard, (Sam Hay) and Ariel's friend, Rusty (newcomer Lakytra "Kiki" Hamilton).
“The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him,” according to a press release.
