Friday, Sept. 5, Theater Works at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts opens its MasterWorks season with “I Get a Kick Out of Cole,” a new collection of popular songs and show tunes based on the life and works of the legendary Cole Porter.
And who doesn’t get a kick out of Cole Porter? The composer of such classics as “Night and Day,” “Anything Goes,” “Too Darn Hot” and “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” conquered both Broadway and Hollywood and reportedly wrote more than 800 songs. His life was fictionalized in a 1946 movie entitled “Night and Day,” which starred Cary Grant in the title role. A 2004 movie, “De-Lovely,” starred Kevin Kline as Cole and Ashley Judd as his wife, Linda.
The Theater Works production of “I Get a Kick Out of Cole” has music and lyrics by Cole Porter, special musical arrangements adapted by musical director Steve Hilderbrand, and book by Steve Hilderbrand and Gary Gallner. In addition, the show, which runs through Sept. 28, will be directed by Steve Hilderbrand and choreographed by Chris Vaglio. The songs of Cole Porter are presented under license with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
