Theater festival a 'WoW' for San Diego- area
The San Diego region will turn into one massive theater starting Thursday, Oct. 3, when the Without Walls Festival gets underway.
Described as a "four-day explosion of site-specific theatre" inspired by similar events in Europe, Without Walls will be held at the La Jolla Playhouse Theatre District - 2910 La Jolla Village Drive - and locations around it through Oct. 13.
It will feature artists from the San Diego area, the United States and other nations in more than 20 theater and art performances.
According to organizers, "festival programming will be a diverse selection of productions with something to offer all ages and tastes – from the family-friendly construction site 'We Built This City' to 'Platonov,' an adult experience that is part Shakespeare in the park, part drive-in movie."
Festival Village at La Jolla Playhouse will be the center of performances; other productions will be held at the UC San Diego campus, La Jolla Shores beach and other San Diego locations.
Some of those scheduled performances are:
- "100% San Diego," a reality-based piece in which San Diego County’s population is represented on stage by 100 San Diegans
- Moving Arts’ "The Car Plays: San Diego," a series of intimate 10-minute plays, each taking place in a car.
- "Our Star Will Die Alone," which explore this question with a participatory, site-specific performance that follows the lifecycle of a star.
In Festival Village, a beer garden will feature live music.
Food trucks will be on hand, and there will be opportunities to meet artists as part of "chats" presented throughout the day.
While there is no charge to enter the Festival Village, all ticketed performances prices range from $5 to $25.
