This year has been an especially good year for many different events in the Arts and Entertainment/Special Events Photography in the Metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia area. From meeting authors of books to mall events and church holiday gatherings, Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding areas has been especially busy with good crowds of people attending them.
What is interesting however, especially in the book arena is that some major bookstore chains have closed their doors. Why has this happened? Simply put, with the increasing number of electronic tablets (Apple IPADS, Amazon Kindle and Kindle Fire, Asus and much more), net books and so on, the idea of reading the hard copy or soft back book has all but disappeared. Yet, at the same time, authors are still appearing to their fans at end-of-the-week gatherings and selling their books in both hard back and soft back. At the same time, there is no doubt that they can still be found on these electronic reading devices. Please read the following articles: Karin Slaughter and John Hart.
At the beginning of the year, one event that still stands out is the one where several cast members of the Days of Our Lives soap opera showed up at the Suwanee, Georgia city hall to sign books for its many Georgia fans (men and women alike, mind you), nearly 2500 in all. This gathering was for the celebration of 45 years for the daytime soap and it still goes strong today. Please visit the article: Days of Our Lives Meet and Greet Atlanta Style.
Then Easter came around, this being a holiday where many find themselves thinking if not going the full-circle and converting to Christianity, so many churches in the Atlanta area held events during Easter weekend. Speaking of holidays, there is the great late Spring holiday of Memorial Day, when people remember those who died in wars dating back to the Civil War up to the present day conflicts and then the celebration of the United States of America, the Fourth of July. In and around Atlanta, there are many great celebrations which include great fire works shows including: Star Spangled Night at Lenox Square Mall which is always televised, and then there are smaller city shows including the ones at Centennial Park and Stone Mountain Park, Georgia. The following are articles on the subjects: Mount Carmel Christian Church Hosts a Busy Easter Week.
Along with the earlier holidays, there is no better time of the year for opportunities of great photography at the time of Halloween with children and even adults dressing up in their favorite ghost, goblins, ghouls and even super hero costumes. Most of the Simon Malls in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area celebrate Halloween by holding their own celebrations with stores handing out candy to children. Then, not long after the end of Halloween comes the Arrival of Santa at area malls. This is certainly a fun time as Santa arrives visiting the malls and even having his own sleigh or North Pole chair accompanying him. This year, Northlake Mall in Atlanta, celebrated Story Time with Santa, a new program that was a big success. There were more than fifty children and parents in attendance. Please refer to the earlier articles on these holiday events: Story Time with Santa at Northlake Mall, Santa Arrives at Northlake Mall in Atlanta and Halloween Atlanta Style
Accompanying the Christmas celebrations, are the many homes in the area that decorate for the holiday. Some of extremely modest with lights and a couple of inflatables celebrating the season, while others are lit up like an electric power station or like Chuck Griswold's home from “Christmas Vacation.” No matter what, it is always a great time taking a ride into different neighborhood's and photographing the different homes.
Speaking of light shows, many venues around the Atlanta area also offered up their own light shows this past year. There is the Magical Night of Lights at Lake Lanier Islands, the Callaway Garden's Christmas light show, Stone Mountain and even the Atlanta Botanical Gardens had a spectacular light show this year. Road Atlanta, Home of NASCAR in Atlanta had more than a million Christmas lights as well.
No matter what, there is a great deal to do in the City of Atlanta and surrounding areas. For more pictures of some of these events, feel free to visit http://www.facebook.com/davebrown64 as well as www.photostrybydavid.com.
Happy New Year and there is no doubt that 2012 will offer even more in the way of events for photography and much more.
