The Year of the Dragon kicks off in Los Angeles

Thousands of people came to experience the cultural events of the Chinatown celebration of the Chinese New Year this past weekend. In the area of Los Angeles just north of the downtown high rises, people of all races and backgrounds gathered to share in the Sunday festivities of one of the oldest and largest cultures in the world.

The streets and marketplaces were lined with visitors, eating, talking and participating in a variety of events. There were performances on a main stage, activities for children, a variety of street vendors, an abundance of cultural food, standalone street musicians, and of course, the warm California sun.

The Chinese New Year, which officially began on January 23, follows the ancient calendar which derives from solar and lunar cycles. The New Year usually starts in late January or early-to-mid February. 2012 marks the Year of the Dragon, which symbolizes great fortune, success, free-spiritedness, and big plans in ancient Chinese culture. Honoring the dragon, a group of men escorted a human-powered representation of the dragon through the streets and shops, bringing good luck into the new year.

Pictures of the festivities and events in Chinatown can be viewed in the accompanying gallery. It was good to see so many people involved in an important cultural event, bringing life to the historic city center shared by people of so many different ethnicities and backgrounds. Los Angeles has the unique distinction of being one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. A picture can say a thousand words, but nothing takes the place of experiencing an event first hand. I recommend that all residents of the Greater LA area participate in such celebrations whenever possible.

For many people who have experienced tough times, including unemployment, pay cuts, repossessions, foreclosures and evictions, they are hoping that the Year of the Dragon, will turn things around. Time will tell, but the year definitely got off to a great start with the celebrations in L.A. and around the globe.
