Those that have grown to know me from my many sites know that I do not kiss anyone’s butt. If I do not like a project I will gladly say so and move on but in kind words because again, someone spent a lot of time and effort on that project and deserve some credibility for going out and trying their best.
When I was releasing my first novel "The Fat Kid's Wolfy Revenge" I restarted my twitter account now titled CraptasticWritr because, I had become a writer in many people's eyes, besides my own. That is when I met these two Canadian girls by the name of Jen and Sylvia Soska. I saw the title of their film and thought it was rather awesome and decided I needed to see this. So, doing what I do, I searched for it via Netflix, Blockbuster and Amazon.com. However, it was not available to rent or buy in the United States yet.
If you haven't been privy to what Dead Hooker In a Trunk is, it is a low budget film (shot for roughly 2500 dollars funded mostly by credit cards) that has more heart and love then any of the films released to the masses in 2011. This film may have been released before this year, but I didn't find this gem until April of 2011 and then had to hunt it down like a crack head hunting down it's pipe their baby found and crawled away with (if you don't like my crack baby joke, sorry :)).
So, the girls and I had made contact, them being foreign aliens and myself being an American, but it wasn't until the NHL playoffs that I really hit it off with Sylvia Soska, half of the amazing twisted twins. See, she is an avid Vancouver Canucks fan, while I myself, love the Chicago Blackhawks. Our teams were facing off in the first round, and when I saw her make a comment via twitter, I couldn't help but make a comment back. Little did we both know that this would start a great friendship and continue my thirst to track down DHIAT (Dead Hooker..you get it now).
Realizing the only way I was going to be able to see this film is if A-I moved to Canada (not happening, too darn cold) or B-Find a region free DVD player, I opted for C which was buying a region free Blu-Ray player so I could play both DVD's and Arrow Films Blu-Ray releases that were not region free to watch on any Blu-Ray player. It truly has been a win-win situation here.
Finally, I was able to watch DHIAT with my now wife and I sat down for an adventure of awesome amazement. Not only did Jen and Sylvia write and direct, they also starred in the film. Also, it has an awesome cast of individuals like CJ Wallis as Goody Two Shoes, Rikki Gagne as "Junkie", Lloyd Bateman as "Killer" and finally Tosha Moth as the proverbial "Hooker".
From start to finish this film is a blast of fun and passion. Yes at times the lines are cheesy and the effects are not the best, but that is what Grindhouse films are all about. Plus, these amazing ladies and actors made this film for fun and love, and thanks to Mr. Hostel himself, Eli Roth, the film was found and passed around like a Hooker at a College Football graduation party (nice huh?).
When Sylvia and Jen finally were able to come back to Hollywood, I had the privilege of picking them up at the amazing Roosevelt Hotel and gave them the tourist treatment which included introducing them to a writer they loved and had named a character after for their upcoming film "American Mary". Mr. Clive Barker who was so kind and generous I almost peed my pants.
How could I top this, well let me answer that question. I took them to Universal City Walk where Jen got to have her first date with her loving and honorable boyfriend, the anti-muppet puppet Assly (see Assly on www.assly.tv). From here I drove them back to their hotel after chugging some Duff beers (Simpsons Energy Drinks) and sharing an amazing night on the town as friends and not talking about "business".
This leads me to American Mary, the twins upcoming and most anticipated film. I cannot go in to too much detail, but I can honestly say, the cast and crew is amazing, and with the heart the girls put in to DHIAT, I know this one will shock and awe audiences who are truly annoyed and tired of the same story that has graced the cinema screens for the past few years. The one thing I have learned in my own life and with the girls is this, if you have a dream, don't let anyone tell you that you cannot do it. The twins have an amazing family (Mom and Dad Soska) who believed in them and told them to go reach their dreams and that is what they did. If you have those same dreams and aspirations, do not let someone tell you that you cannot do something. If you are tired of the same garbage that graces the screen each and every week, then do something about it. It is a New Year in less then 24 hours! Maybe you are reading this after January 1st and if you are, then start here! No more excuses, just do what you want to do (now don't quit your job or anything, baby steps haha).
I chose to cover Dead Hooker In A Trunk because it is finally going to see the light of day to the United States thanks to IFC. Come January 31st you too can have a Dead Hooker in your living room television and you can enjoy the loving heart and passion this bare bones crew created. It is something that comes around once in awhile, so do not miss your chance to see it when it is finally available. When American Mary hits the film festival market in 2012, make sure to drop by and see it, and tell them the Craptastic Writer and Assly wish them the best. Girls, We love you, and thank you for taking a step forward to saving Horror with a fresh look and new characters with Katharine Isabelle (Mary), Julia Maxwell (Tessa), Antonio Cupo (Billy Barker), Paula Lindberg (Ruby RealGirl), Tristan Risk (Beatress Johnson) starring in American Mary.
May you all have a Happy New Year and Sweet Nightmares from Kristian, The Craptastic Writer.
