The Xbox 720 will require internet connection to play games

Microsoft's next-gen platform, codenamed Durango, may change the way we view future consoles. According to Kotaku, a source told the gaming website that the Xbox 720 will require an internet connect to start or run games. The main reason for the required connection is to help fight piracy. In addition, if the console is inactive for more than three minutes, any game or app running will be suspended.

If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started," the source added. If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.

Kotaku also had the chance to speak to a Microsoft spokesperson who said the company has no comments on the rumors at this time.

We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time." That's from a Microsoft spokesperson after we asked, today, about this always-online rumor and told them this story was planned.

Not only will the Xbox 720 require an internet connection, but VG27 mentioned that the Kinect will be apart of the operating system. The Kinect is said to be built into the machine as a standard feature with "four or six cores" for processing. A blu-ray player has also been added to the new system.

The rumored specs for the upcoming console are as followed: AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

The next generation Xbox is expected to hit store shelves during the 2013 holiday season. What do you think about these changes? Should gamers only be allowed to be play games with an online connection? Write a comment below.
