"The X Factor" USA 2013 resumed Dec. 11 on FOX as the top four contestants hit the stage once again to sing live for America's votes. Manufactured country boy band Restless Road opened their set with a version of a recent Luke Bryan hit that drew screams of delight from the audience who voted for them to perform it, but a mixed reaction from the mentors.
During their pre-performance segment, the band, which is comprised of former solo artists Zach Beeken, Andrew Scholz and Colton Pack, marveled that Restless Road didn't exist four months ago, and shared the common sentiment that they'd all hoped to be like country music star Bryan. They were very pleased to be singing "That's My Kind of Night," and Simon Cowell mused that their affection for the tune would help them to "give it their best."
Unfortunately for the trio, the live performance wasn't their best. With the exception of Pack, who seems to be own frontman status, the vocals seemed weak and the harmonies lacked cohesiveness.
The effort drew a mixed reaction from the panelists. Kelly Rowland called it "so much fun" and the "perfect sound for you guys." Demi Lovato disagreed. She called it "fun" but "awkward" and said it wasn't "exciting" enough. Paulina Rubio was a little kinder, praising Pack's effort as "the main piece" of the band but chastising Beeken and Scholz for not being stronger. Cowell admitted that the vocals were "shaky" early on, but reminded America that they're a brand new group, and opined that the finals wouldn't be the same without them.
