"The X Factor" USA 2013 continued Dec. 11 on FOX with semifinal round action from the four remaining acts. Although all of the contestants turned in admirable offerings, it was the soulful boyfriend/girlfriend duo of Alex & Sierra who cemented their claim to front runner status with their third piece of the night, a breathtaking version of Sara Bareilles' "Gravity."
Before they hit the stage, Sierra Deaton reminded America that she and partner Alex Kinsey are mere college students who "scramble money together to get... tacos," so being within arm's reach of a million dollar recording contract was mind-boggling. Despite being the beneficiaries of plenty of love from voters during their tenure in the competition, including a number one iTunes hit in A Great Big World's "Say Something," Alex showed humility when he called advancing to the last stage "really, really difficult."
If the prize were awarded based on a single performance, Alex & Sierra could have snagged it with their take on the popular song. They looked amazing as they stood together singing to one another, and they sounded even better, as both nailed their respective parts with professional-grade ease.
All four mentors granted them a standing ovation. With tears in her eyes, Kelly Rowland said both sounded "absolutely incredible." She then addressed Sierra, and told her that she had loved watching her "blossom." Demi Lovato, who also spoke through tears, called the performance "flawless," "beautiful" and "captivating," and said they were stars. Paulina Rubio told them they have the x factor. Finally, the pair's mentor Simon Cowell deemed the effort "raw" and "subtle" and told Sierra that he wished he could "bottle the last 10 seconds of that song... and have it for the rest of my life because it was perfection."
