"The X Factor" USA 2013 continued Dec. 18 on FOX with the reality singing competition's performance finale. One of the evening's most memorable offerings featured single dad and aspiring rocker Jeff Gutt as he teamed up with Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik to sing the mega hit "Iris."
When the duo hit the stage together to perform live, the screams from the audience were so loud that it was hard to hear the opening bars of the song. Once the static died down, however, the pairing proved to be a terrific one for Gutt's 1990s rocker-style pipes. The arrangement differed just enough from the original to make it interesting while not offending the ears of long-time Goo Goo Dolls fans. There was an odd little blip near the end when someone appeared to miss a vocal cue, but it didn't detract at all from the performance.
The performance was met with a standing ovation from the mentors. A very flustered Demi Lovato proclaimed herself "so starstruck" by Rzeznik's presence, but praised Gutt for holding his own. Paulina called Gutt "a beautiful musician" before reminding the 37-year old that "rock and roll never ages." Simon Cowell called it "the perfect collaboration" and the "perfect song" for Gutt. Finally, over 25s mentor Kelly Rowland said she was "so proud" of him for "kill[ing]" the performance.
Twitterverse responded in kind. User LoueeBelle summed up the sentiments of many when she wrote "jeff gutt and john rzeznik singing iris was basically just the highlight of my life."
To see if Gutt claims the million-dollar recording contract and the season three title and catch performances by a host of guests including Lea Michele, One Direction, Mary J. Blige and Leona Lewis, watch "The X Factor" USA 2013 finale results show Dec. 19 on FOX.
