"The X Factor" USA 2013 resumed Dec. 18 on FOX with the season three performance finale, which featured the finalists singing three times each for America's final votes. After turning in a jaw-dropping take on Ed Sheeran's "Give Me Love" and teaming up with international super star Leona Lewis to perform her hit "Bleeding Love," Alex & Sierra closed out their portion of the evening with a reprise of "Say Something" that left all four mentors in awe.
The popular boyfriend and girlfriend duo's original Dec. 4 rendition of the A Great Big World single earned them the top spot on the iTunes top 400 singles chart and cemented their position as the competition's front-running act.
Despite the potential perils of choosing to perform a song that had already been declared nearly perfect, Alex & Sierra's reprise was stunning. The vocals were passionate, spot-on technically and emotionally convincing. Their collective talent is undeniable.
Kelly Rowland marveled over the performance, calling it even better than their first effort. She told a teary Sierra to go ahead and cry, and congratulated them on their success. Demi Lovato said "you always blow me away" and predicted that they'd "go far" in the music industry. Paulina Rubio called them "the perfect artist" and praised the way they used Sierra's piano play and Alex's guitar skills to enhance the performance. Simon Cowell called them the kind of act that American talent shows need to showcase, and opined that they deserve to win. He said they were "two of the nicest people I've ever had the fortune to work with" and praised them for not changing over the course of the competition.
After a live feed from Alex's home town of Daytona Beach, Fla. saw the mayor dedicate the entire week to the talented duo, a tearful Alex turned to Sierra, prompting viewers to think a marriage proposal was in store. Though he didn't propose, he thanked her for "enjoying" the competition with him, and then thanked voters and fans for their support.
To find out if Alex & Sierra claim the million dollar recording contract and to see them perform the seasonal favorite "All I Want for Christmas is You," watch "The X Factor" USA 2013 finale results show Dec. 19 on FOX.
