"The X Factor" USA 2013 continued Oct. 9 on FOX as boys group mentor Paulina Rubio selected her final four contestants via the nail biting four chair challenge. Although the Latin super star will take a talented quartet of aspiring singers to the live shows, her time in the hot seat wasn't without controversy.
Snagging spots on Rubio's final squad were Carlos Guevara, who suffers from Tourette's Syndrome and hopes to be "an inspiration" to others; 24-year old college grad Tim Olstad; Carlito Olivero, who celebrated his victory by swinging "X Factor" host Mario Lopez around the stage; and Josh Levi, who both Simon Cowell and Kelly Rowland called a future super star.
It wasn't, however, an uncomplicated journey for the self-doubting Olstad, as Rubio initially sent him packing after giving his seat to teen Timmy Thames. Both Demi Lovato and Rowland were stunned by Rubio's decision, and the live audience reacted with utter disdain, showering Rubio with an impressive onslaught of boos until she finally called for a time out.
After asking Lopez to summon Olstad back to the stage, she admitted that she'd made a mistake and said she wanted him back on her team. An emotional Olstad thanked Rubio from afar as she gave him the seat previously occupied by Al Calderon.
Following the show, the admittedly self-conscious but adorable Olstad took to Twitter to share his excitement with followers, tweeting "This is absolutely surreal!! Honestly, thank you!!!"
