The third season of "The X Factor" U.S. premiered on Fox on Sept. 11, 2013. And it was the show's lowest-rated season premiere so far. This news should come as no surprise to people who've been reading my "X Factor" blog because I've been reporting for quite some time that "The X Factor" U.S. would continue on a downward spiral in the ratings because the show has alienated too many viewers with bad business decisions, such as hiring unlikable on-screen personalities to judge or host the show.
According to the Nielsen Company, the Season 3 premiere episode, got only 6.2 million U.S. viewers. That's a big drop-off from the approximately 9 million U.S. viewers who tuned in to "The X Factor" U.S. Season 2 premiere in 2012. And about 12.5 million U.S. viewers watched the "The X Factor" U.S. Season 1 premiere in 2011.
The total of 6.2 million viewers is even less impressive if you consider that "The X Factor" was competing against reruns in the same time slot on ABC ("Shark Tank") and The CW ("Arrow"), and that the show wasn't up against NBC's "The Voice," which will absolutely clobber "The X Factor" in the ratings when "The Voice" U.S.'s fifth season premieres on Sept. 23, 2013.
The NBC reality show "America's Got Talent" was the highest-rated U.S. show on Sept. 11, 2013, with 9.8 million U.S. viewers, according to the Nielsen Company. About half of the prime-time network shows had repeat episodes that night; the other shows (such as "America's Got Talent," "Big Brother," and "The X Factor") had new episodes.
"The X Factor" came in second place in its time slot and third place overall for the night, behind "America's Got Talent" (10.8 million U.S. viewers) and CBS's "Big Brother" (6.8 million U.S. viewers). However, ratings are less likely to improve once the show goes up against mostly new episodes of hit shows on other networks, such as ABC's "Modern Family" and CBS's "Criminal Minds." Many of these new episodes will begin airing in late September 2013.
[UPDATE: According to the Nielsen Company, the 6.2 million U.S. viewers for "The X Factor" U.S. Season 3 premiere were the preliminary ratings. The final ratings for the episode were 6.5 million U.S. viewers.]
There are several reasons for why "The X Factor" continues to lose millions of viewers. In 2012, I reported from the beginning that Britney Spears and Khloe Kardashian would flop with "X Factor" viewers. And I was right, because ratings took a nosedive, as numerous "X Factor" viewers complained about Spears and Kardashian, and said they would no longer watch "The X Factor" as long as Spears and Kardashian were on the show.
Spears and Kardashian are no longer on "The X Factor" U.S., but the damage has already been done with all the viewers who have stopped watching the show. "The X Factor" U.S. has disappointed on so many levels too many times; therefore, the show is not going to win back the majority of viewers it has already lost.
In 2013, there seems to be three main reasons for "The X Factor" losing even more viewers, not necessarily listed in order of importance:
- People are bored with the show and think "The X Factor" is inferior to "The Voice."
- Viewers are not impressed with the show's 2013 panel of judges (Simon Cowell, Kelly Rowland, Demi Lovato and Paulina Rubio).
- There is a major public backlash against Cowell for his arrogant persona and his antics on screen and off screen, including Cowell having an adulterous affair with a close friend's wife and getting her pregnant.
You only need to look at Internet message boards that discuss "The X Factor" U.S. to see the overwhelming number of viewers who are turned off from the show for one or more of these reasons. And the proof is in the rapidly decreasing ratings that "The X Factor" U.S. is losing millions of viewers.
I already predicted that all of this would happen, so the lower ratings in Season 3 are not surprising to me at all.
Here is a sampling of viewer comments that were made on the Internet after "The X Factor" U.S. Season 3 premiered:
"We are sick of these 'no talent' bums like Simon & making hundreds of millions to do nothing but judge others talents when Simon has none and Secrest as a master is ceremonies making 50 million a year."
"Like anyone wants to watch that trashy Simon,he needs to go back to England and stay there!"
"I tuned into The X-Factor because I like Demi Lovato and enjoy the banter between her and Simon. There was none of that. It was not only boring, but fake. I didn't believe anything they had to say about the contestants because it was so far over the top. I won't be tuning in again."
"Any show that even mentions the name 'Simon Cowell' I don't watch it."
"All these shows suck. Now the ratings are finally starting to prove it."
"I don't agree ALL these shows are dead. There's clearly an audience for them. The problem is finding the right way to package them. I watched part of last season and never got into it, partly because of Khloe (seriously?!?) and mainly because of Demi Lovato, who is intolerable. Nothing I saw in the promos for this season was enough to drag me back.:
"Worst judges of any season."
"Simon has it all wrong, the first season was the only season worth watching! Bring back Paula, NIcole and the black guy. Also the talent was horrible last year reminded me of american idol can you say snooze button!!"
"Where the hell did simon get the idea for paulina rubio? She is not even well liked among her people! She can't be understood in spanish let alone in english!! She sound looks plastic !!"
"The X factor, and other shows that are exactly like it...are not about the new talent! Its ALL about the judges...the stars! The spotlight is for them...again."
"When are the #$%$ kissing idiots at FOX going to realize what we have all known since September of 2011? That "The X Factor" is #$%$ and never should have made it past season one, let alone to three."
"The UK version was better, at least in 2010 it had near 50% share of viewing audience."
"DIE, X-Factor, DIE!"
"I never watched the first season but I wanted to because Paula was a judge and I thought it would be like "AI" in the early day with Paula & Simon. Sadly, I missed that season due to work. I don't DVD shows to watch later. You can catch the highlights on yahoo news etc...... Anyway, When Britney was hired as a judge I made a special effort to watch since she is one of my all time favorites. Yes, she wasn't great as a judge but no odd behavior as I am sure Simon was hoping for. Brit was there but didn't really add anything special by performing etc... Basically she did very little. I still watched although I was bored. Carly Rose was awesome though! She should have won. I am hoping she come out with a CD because I will definitely buy it. Will I watch X-Factor this year? No! The judges are dull and boring. Also, Simon getting his friends wife preggy makes me sick! He is a shameful, self absorbed SOB! Go back to the UK dirt bag! I hope Fox cancels this dud reality singing competition. We have 'The Voice' here to watch. They have CHER this year as a mentor. Can't wait!!!!"
"I never watched X-Factor before watching my DVR this morning and as much as I love Simon, and Kelly and Demi okay, as well, it's just another talent show with same old same old stuff. Some good, some suck, but who cares any more. I loved Idol until it started to self-destruct (that would be thanks to JLo then NM and MC) but I think they have all worn out their welcome. That being said, a big shout out to Idol for Adam Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, and the cute as a button Kellie Pickler. Not a big fan of JHud or Carrie, but that's just me, no reflection on their talent. Anyway, time to find another way to entertain American audiences, like maybe back to well-written, scripted TV."
"That's because everyone is tired of Simon Cowell!!!"
"Britney killed X Factor."
"I watched the first and second season but have no interest in watching this season. Has anyone even heard anything of the first two winners? The X-Factor just doesn't have the X-Factor."
"I agree, Lorie. It's too much drama, overly-exaggerated performances with lighting and dancers, too loud music, and not much talent who go onward to do nothing."
"Demi again won't watch. She is so fake and immature."
"Demi is gorgeous inside n out!"
"It was Great !"
"Loved loved loved the show last night! way to go Simon."
"Demi dresses like an old Russian peasant, not a young girl, why?"
"All three women were excellent choices, and there is not one controversial cast member this season."
"Great mix of judges this year."
"Love the chemistry between judges."
"Paulina rubio is not a good judge....not a good singer and nobody in the english speaking market knows her.........."
"I loved the number of people watching the show last night, Simon. A debut without Britney, with a number of viewers so very low ... I think you should rename the program to 'The Flop Factor'. Xoxo"
From the Huffington Post:
"The X-Factor is almost painful to watch...no, it is painful to watch. Can't wait for The Voice to start. That one I love."
"American Idol should have ended when Simon left. Its too predictable and childish now. X factor is just an excuse of a show to have a show and boring, overly done, and no wow factor. The Voice is the only show that should be left on the air. Its more mature, fun to watch, loads of talent and addictive."
"I remembered when Cowell promised 20 million before the shows first episode. 6.2 probably won't keep it on the air past this season. Expect him back at American Idol next year if there is a next year for that show."
"If they weren't on the same show at the same time, I would think that Rubio and Lovato were the same person."
"Simon Cowell has proved completely inept at casting fellow judges. I think he thinks he is more of a draw than he really is. The show seems destined for cancellation."
"Since the debut of 'The Voice", I've not been interested in the others. And Simon Cowell is no longer a novelty.....he can leave the air."
