'The X Factor' U.K. 2013 Episode 32: Sam Bailey wins; Nicholas McDonald is No. 2

Sam Bailey was named the 10th winner of "The X Factor" U.K. in the season-finale episode that ITV televised on Dec. 15, 2013. Bailey's victory had been widely predicted, since several media outlets had reported that she was getting the largest percentage of votes in most of the weeks leading up to the finale. (ITV has now released all of "The X Factor" U.K.'s voting statistics for 2013, which are listed at the end of this article.) Nicholas McDonald, 17, came in second place. The voting statistics show that Bailey and McDonald were always the top two contestants in getting votes on "The X Factor" U.K. this year.

As part of the "X Factor" grand prize, Bailey has won a Sony Music recording contract and an opening-act slot on Beyoncé's 2014 U.K. tour. Bailey (a 36-year-old married mother of two children) is the first "X Factor" U.K. winner from the Overs category since Steve Brookstein (who was 38 at the time) became the first "X Factor" U.K. winner in 2004.

Bailey's "X Factor" mentor was Sharon Osbourne, who returned to "The X Factor" U.K. judging panel in 2013 after being a judge on the show from 2004 to 2007.

"The X Factor" U.K. host Dermot O'Leary mentioned that Bailey had more than 1 million votes for the finale. Bailey, who looked shocked and terrified that she won, said in her first comments after it was announced that she was the winner: "I don't know what to say. I just want to say that I love that boy to pieces, Nicky McDonald. And he's got the most amazing voice. He needs to get an album out as well, and I love him to death."

O'Leary then turned to McDonald and asked how he felt. McDonald replied, "If I was going to get beat by anybody, it was going to be Sam. Sam is a hard one to beat. But I just want to say thank you to absolutely everyone who's voted for me, week in and week out. This is not the end of me I know I'll have an album out, and I'll see everyone on the tour. Love you." Louis Walsh, who was McDonald's "X Factor" mentor, was at McDonald's side and smiled proudly during McDonald's farewell comments.

During the episode, Bailey sang Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper," which is Bailey's first post-"X Factor" single. Bailey's version of "Skyscraper" is expected to debut at No. 1 in the U.K., as have all of the first singles from "X Factor" U.K. winners. Earlier in the episode, Bailey sang Jennifer Rush's "The Power of Love," a song also made famous by Celine Dion.

McDonald sang Five for Fighting's "Superman," which would have been his first single if he had won. Contestants who finish in second place on "The X Factor" usually get record deals with Sony Music anyway, so expect McDonald to also be signed to Sony Music. Earlier in the episode, McDonald sang Sarah McLachlan's "Angel."

Former "X Factor" U.K. contestants Luke Friend (third place in 2013) and Tamera Foster (fifth place in 2013) are also widely predicted to get signed to Sony Music. Friend was eliminated from the show in the episode that aired on Dec. 14, 2013.

Speaking of former "X Factor" U.K. contestants, 11 of the Top 12 of 2013 (Bailey, McDonald, Friend, Foster, Hannah Barrett, Rough Copy, Kingsland Road, Miss Dynamix, Shelley Smith, Sam Callahan and Abi Alton) gathered for one final group performance on "The X Factor" stage to sing Katy Perry's "Roar." (Lorna Simpson, who came in 12th place on the show this year, was not there. No reason was given for her absence.)

As previously reported, guest performers in this episode were One Direction (who performed "Midnight Memories"); Gary Barlow and Elton John, who sang their duet "Face to Face"; and Katy Perry, who sang "Unconditionally."
