The 2013 People’s Choice Awards aired on Jan. 9 on CBS and the star-studded affair was chock full of surprises in the television category. On Jan. 9, Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor” won against “Dancing with the Stars,” “The Voice,” “American Idol,” and “America’s Got Talent.” Judge Demi Lovato also won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Celebrity Judge. Surprisingly, Simon Cowell wasn’t even nominated.
Demi Lovato defeated Adam Levine from “The Voice,” Britney Spears from “The X Factor,” Christina Aguilera from “The Voice,” and Jennifer Lopez from “American Idol.”
Wednesday night's wins by “The X Factor” and Demi Lovato were big surprises, especially since “The Voice” easily won the ratings game this season. “Dancing with the Stars” is on the decline and is even considering airing just once, rather than twice per year. “America’s Got Talent” is a big hit in the summer, but has no competition since other shows are on hiatus. “American Idol” did very well last season, so “The X Factor” win was a bit of a spoiler.
The cast for the first season of “The X Factor” originally included Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Paula Abdul, and L.A. Reid as judges, with Nicole Scherzinger and Steve Jones serving as co-hosts. However, Cole was dismissed from her judging duties after two sets of auditions, and replaced by Scherzinger for the duration of the season. In season two, Demi Lovato and Britney Spears replaced Abdul and Scherzinger, while Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez stepped in as the new co-hosts.
In December, L.A. Reid announced that season two would be his last on “The X Factor.” Simon Cowell has already confirmed that he’s set to return for season three. On Jan. 9, Britney Spears confirmed that she is also returning. There’s still no word if Demi Lovato, a 2013 People’s Choice winner, will join her.
