The Wizard of Oz is everywhere this fall. On September 20, 2013 The Wizard of Oz: An IMAX 3D Experience opened nationwide for a limited run. Locally, it's playing at IMAX theaters in the Pacific Northwest through September 27. The Wizard of Oz opened at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood on August 15, 1939 and received five Academy Award nominations. It was reissued by MGM in 1949 and 1955, and made its network television premier on CBS in 1956. More than 45 million people tuned in for the initial telecast, and since then it's become an annual tradition.
Now Andrew Lloyd Webber's new stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz is entertaining audiences. It made its debut in London's West End in 2011, where it ran for six months. From there it went onto its North American premiere at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theater in December 2012, where more than 600,000 people saw the show during its six-month run. The show's North American tour, which includes 21 cities, kicked off on September 10, 2013 at The Smith Center in Las Vegas. West coast engagements include Los Angeles (Sept. 17-Oct.6), Seattle (Oct. 9-13), San Francisco (Oct. 16-27) and Vancouver BC (Nov. 5-10).
The musical was developed from the MGM screenplay, and the new production contains all the familiar Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg songs from the movie score, plus new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The North American tour features many of the cast members who were in the Toronto production, including Danielle Wade as Dorothy, selected by the public through CBC TV's Over the Rainbow reality show; Mike Jackson as the Tin Man; Lee MacDougall as the Lion; Jamie McKnight as the Scarecrow; and Robin Evan Willis as Glinda.
