Fall/Winter 2013 at New York Fashion Week brought us the decadent debut collection of Canadian designer, Heather Lawton. It all took place at Studio 450 on Thursday, February 7, 2013 as excited fans were enticed by this wintry collection.
This collection had a wildly imaginative theme set in a winter wonderland of wools. It was the dark and ominous tale of a glamorous woman pushed into the carnivorous clutches of winter's barren landscape. Outerwear was one of the great highlights of the collection in luxurious fabrics such as stingray, fine leathers, plush wools and furs. Equestrian accents, studs and exposed zippers were just some of the unique qualities that were part of that extra added touch and attention to detail.
Winter does not necessarily have to be dreary. Deep cobalt, navy and hot pink set the tone and give the pieces a most memorable impression in the design world. To fight the wintry elements of nature, models were equipped with accessories and signature hoods and fur-hooded capes. Long lace gloves evoked thoughts of the princess in all of us.
With this newest collection also comes a special line of jewelry, "Heidi Gardner for Heather Lawton". In keeping with that fairytale theme, the jewelry provides an elegant woman's escape from the confines of her everyday routine.
What makes Lawton so creative is her surroundings. She is inspired by not only her native Canada, but also by her urban life in New York. Riding horses has been more than a hobby for her and we see her love of riding horses in some of the pieces such as a white sweater with two running horses designed on to the center of the piece. Lawton is extremely detail-oriented and draping the fabric on the body is one of her strong suits. She unveiled her Fall/Winter 2011 Collection during Toronto Fashion Week. She has gained accolades and much attention for her interspersing of fine silks, lace and cashmere with textured and unusual fabrics such as goat hair, Mongolian Lambs wool, crocodile and python.
Heather has a way of making the simple become aesthetically glorified and glitzy such as the sequined and velvet jacket which is the perfect accompaniment to the black dress or black pants. A fashion favorite was definitely the black snowflake-like embellished v-neck blouse paired with black satiny pants and a feather-filled jacket to really dress it up and turn heads.
Heather Lawton has conquered the fashion world and is the hero of her fairytale. We salute the creativity and originality of this wonderful damsel of the design world.
