Comedian Aziz Ansari has broken the record for the most ticket sales at Boston's The Wilbur Theatre with ten sold out consecutive shows, and in honor of the achievement, The Wilbur dedicated a permanent seat at the 100-year-old theater in a press-only ceremony earlier tonight.
Aziz Ansari is one of the biggest stars in comedy, even gracing the cover of Rolling Stone, who called him “the funniest man under 30.” He rose to fame co-starring opposite Amy Poehler in the Emmy-nominated NBC series “Parks and Recreation”, which is now in its sixth season. Ansari’s portrayal of government employee ‘Tom Haverford’ has earned him critical praise, as TV Guide named him a “Scene Stealer” and People Magazine naming him 2011’s “Funniest Dude in Prime Time.”
Ansari's third hour-long stand-up special “Buried Alive” premiered late last year on Netflix, garnering high praise from critics and fans alike. Both The Onion AV Club and Paste Magazine named the special one of the best standup specials of the year, and Ansari is the first comedian to sell out each and every one of his incredible ten-show run in Boston.
Celebrating 100 years, The Wilbur, located in Boston’s historic Theatre District, is the premiere destination for comedy and music in Boston. Built in 1914 by The Shubert Brothers, The Wilbur opened in 1915 and was named for The Shubert Theatre’s manager A.L. Wilbur. Recently revitalized by former Comedy Connection owner Bill Blumenreich in July of 2008, The Wilbur has become a first-class venue showcasing A-list comedians and musicians. A Comedy Central verified venue, the theater has attracted the best of the best in comedy including Aziz Ansari, Louis CK, Kevin Hart, Katt Williams and Jim Gaffigan. They also boast award-winning musicians from all genres such as Boyz II Men, Lauryn Hill, Lyle Lovitt and Smoky Robinson. Offering an intimate show setting, The Wilbur provides the perfect environment for enjoying comedy sensations and chart topping artists in the heart of Boston’s historic Theater District.
Boston congratulates Ansari for his massive achievement as fans flock to The Wilbur for a weekend of hilarity!
