The Whaley House comes alive: “And so, a Whaley mystery begins”

According to the Travel Channel’s Americas Most Haunted, the Whaley House located in San Diego’s Old Town is said to be America’s number one most haunted house. Maritza Skandunas Founder of The San Diego Ghost Hunters and her team would have to agree. The San Diego Ghost Hunters lead Paranormal Investigation Tours once a month on a volunteer basis at the Whaley House Museum to help preserve and maintain the property.

A recent investigation proved to be one night the guests would not soon forget!

Matthew Schulz, Technical Director comments: “I was conducting the second of two scheduled sample EVP sessions with a group of around 10 guest investigators in the House's dining room. I posted at my usual spot; back against the general store exit/entry door while facing the kitchen wall. After I explained the basics of EVP, I called out to Mr. Whaley, asking him to make his presence known within the room. After my first attempt, two distinct and loud wood-against-wood dragging sounds were heard by the group originating from the second floor above our heads. The sounds were so forceful, even a friction "squeak" was created that gave the impression the moving object was very heavy such as a bed or dresser. Though tough to say specifically where on the second story the sound came from, I remembered the direction to be toward the back and to the right of the dining room (as one faces the kitchen wall).

Since errant noise from guest investigators is a common, I had assumed it was so and didn't give it a second thought until chatting with Colleen who was station in the Whaley master bedroom above. She had heard the same noise and thought it originated from the room below her -- the dining room.

And so, a Whaley mystery begins.”

At the close of the tour, with all guests, docents, and the sdGH team seated in the courtroom, the Whaley House served up one set of heavy footsteps walking above them, heard by nearly everyone.

Lead Investigator Colleen Rose states: “If there were non-believers in the group that night, many left with a whole new perspective of the paranormal world!”

Both Matt and Colleen captured the sound of dragging furniture on their digital voice recorders, and special guest Investigator Gerald Reynolds of the The Queen Mary also captured the sound while using a video camera.
