The founder and leader of the Westboro Baptist Church is having some health issue. Those health issues have led to having him place in a care facility. According to a March 16 report by the Washington Post, the Westboro Baptist Church leader is in a care facility is in Shawnee County, Kansas.

The exact nature of the Westboro Baptist Church leader's health concerns were not released by the church spokesperson, Steve Drain. Steve Drain did admit that Fred Phelps is “an old man” and the “old people get health problems.” Fred Phelps is now 84.

“I'm confident it isn't a heart condition,” Carol Lawrence, from Oklahoma City, said. “[Fred Phelps] doesn't have a heart. He's been spreading hate for decades. Someone who does that doesn't have a heart.”

Margie Phelps-Roper, the daughter of Fred Phelps and a spokesperson for the church, has yet to issue a statement. Some who follow the activities of the Westboro Baptist Church think this could mean that his health condition is worse than Steve Drain is making it appear.

“If Margie isn't talking, it must be bad,” Linda Wright, a Methodist church member who watches the Westboro Baptist Church closely, said. “She is always out front, letting everyone know what is going on. Fred must be really sick, maybe close to death.”

At the time of publication, it is unknown how, if at all, Fred Phelps' health will impact the Westboro Baptist Church and its protests. Phelps was rarely out picketing funerals with the church, which mostly consists of Phelps family members.
